Why does my laptop only use 2 to 3 CPU speeds?

My Pavilion has a Turion MT-37 and when it's on AC, AMD CPU driver and Windows power scheme togeter will only use 0.8, 1.6 and 2.0 GHz and when on battery it will only use 0.8 and 1.6 GHz

I just learned that using RMClock, the CPU can operate at 0.8, 1.0, 1.2, 1.4,1.6,1.8 and 2.0 GHz.

I set to "performance on demand" and set the CPU load taget to 85%, so CPU doesn't clock up until 85% load is exceeded.

Does it simply not offer much value in battery saving to implement multiple level CPU speed changing?

It offers a little battery savings, but not a huge savings. I mean test the different settings out and see what suits you best. For me, I'm plugged in most of the times so I have two different settings:
    1. When I'm plugged in my CPU is at the 2.0Ghz all the time.
    2. When I'm only using the battery, it will keep the clock settings low to save power.

Another way to save power when you are on the go is to set the brightness levels of the LCD down.
