I'm not even downloading or doing anything, just searching my email and stuff...

And my 160gb hard drive keeps showing 101.8gb of 140gb free, then few hrs later it is 97.8gb of 140gb free, then few minutes later it is 94.7gb of 140gb free...

I don't get it, I'm even deleting programs and stuff I don't need and it's still going down.

I'm using the laptop and OS in my signature.

Probably Vista caching stuff and creating shadow copies.

I turned off system restore and have much larger hard-drives now. Much happier. I can live without system restore, I will just do a clean install if I hose things up. Vista System Restore will use up to 15% of your hard-drive at stock settings!

Unless you need the space, leave system restore turned on. What good is all of that empty space? It's like having a big empty warehouse that you paid for, and only using it for a small box of things.

Anyway, see the guide in my sig for more info about where your disk space is going.

I personally kill system restore because that thing never works for me when I really have an issue. It always goes "cannot restore to the select date, please select a different restore point"

Have you actually used system restore on Vista? (I haven't, but it's different than what you may have seen on XP). Also, system restore is not the only part of the system, it's all part of Volume Shadow Copy now, which can be more useful if you have previous versions (vista ultimate).

I used the restore on ultimate 64 because norton and cs2 screwed my system good and it didn't work...

Just make system recovery discs when you get the computer, and constantly back up all your important data. Chances are, when you do need to restore, you're better off clean installing anyways.

go into the screen where you have your Vista Score, and click the system protection tad on the left. Once there, turn off system restore. Uncheck your C drive.
