I have an HP Elitebook 8730w with microsoft XP OS. I use the lap top to run an instrument so it is on at all times. We have turned off the powersave options, the MS updates and the time sync with the MS website and it still freezes to where Ctrl alt delete doesnt work.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to why this is happening? would the need for software updates cause this?

    Thanks! :)

This is likely caused by a program using 100% of the cpu. Reboot it. If it doesn't respond, hold the power button for 5 seconds to do a hard reboot. Then see if you can get into the task manager. See which program is using all the CPU power and disable it.

Could also be a virus of some sort. You might want to run Norton or an equivalent scanner.

    Hope this helps!

    Hello sans_tech_savvy

So many things can cause lock-freeze ups. Have you tried running safe mode? If so, do you still lock up ? What about your memory, have you replaced, upgraded it lately? Have you changed, updated a driver ? When I hear you cannot Ctrl alt delete, it makes me think hardware related.
