That was the only thing stopping me from buying the DV6500.
I'm just curious if they ever released a statement as to why?
The DV6500 is marketed as a media laptop...
-
HP isn't known for providing cutting edge graphics or components. I expect that most 8600GTs are at this point being used in gaming rigs, which require more power than media units (but also cost more). Dell offers Gts on their Inspiron line, both in 15 and 17 inch models.
-
Media laptop doesn't exactly mean gaming... and probably Pavilions aren't designed to handle that kind of power consumption and heat.
Also as HP say:
Otheriwse, their business line offers more powerful video cards.... -
media laptops dont need the best graphics cards, the 8600mGT is really catered to ppl who want to play games, the 8400m is enough for what they want it to do.
-
If you want a "cheaper" laptop with a better GPU from a mainstream builder, look at Dell.

Why is the dv6500 a 15" laptop? Why is it black? Why does it have only one hard drive? Why isn't the keyboard bigger? Why doesn't it have a BluRay drive? Why doesn't it comes in green and yellow and pink? Why doesn't it have FireWire 800? Why doesn't it have two video cards in SLI mode? Why doesn't it weight 3.6 lbs? Why? Why??
Was this a serious question? Or are you just whining and complaining? -
Can the 8400M GS handle all the Vista effects?
-
An integrated graphics processor can handle Vista effects. Vista isn't all that demanding (though it does like the RAM).
I don't think it's completely ridiculous to ask why HP doesn't put better GPUs in their notebooks...but like others have said...it's just something they've choosen not to do. HP makes great multimedia and work notebooks but unfortunately they seem to think that the only way to have a gaming notebook is to spend buckets of cash on a Voodoo PC (Which I frankly don't like the looks of very much)
Perhaps someday they'll create a notebook line that could compete with Dell's Inspirons for budget gaming but for now it's not something they offer so if gaming is one of the more important aspects in the notebook you're looking for then you might want to consider a manufacturer besides HP. -
The only game I was hoping to play was Gears of War for maybe a month. I don't think I'll be able to play it on my dv6500t, but I wouldn't get much use out of a high end GPU, so it doesn't really matter.
Why no 8600 GT?
