So it's HP's flagship model - yet they put a lesser screen on it ??

They also took out the WWAN and GPS features that the Envy 14 has ??

Also, no option for two 1TB HDD's ??

    I just don't get it ......

I'm not certain a 1TB HDD exists in the notebook form factor. Where did yo see that?

He said in that notebook form factor, he's referring to the height of the drive that's supported by the Envy 17 I believe. The typical form factor is 9.5mm, which is what 99% of notebook hard drives out there are. That particular drive of yours, is 12.5mm. Savvy, pirate?

So to answer your question: probably because the bloody thing won't fit. Or because they figured offering a 1TB solution is more than enough for most people, nobody really wants a 2TB solution. lolz.

Regarding WWAN/GPS, I think it has to do with the sheer size/weight of the laptop. They figured most people aren't going to be using their 17in laptop as a GPS in their cars. It's a desktop replacement, so WWAN/GPS really don't make a lot of sense.

For the radiance display, I don't know, I'm assuming price. Email HP I guess.

Reading your signature, I'm assuming you're going to ask sooner or later, if you haven't already.... my man, you don't want a 1920x1080 screen on a 14.5in laptop. You're not going to see any of the text. 1600x900 is really perfect, text will probably already be a "tad" too small. There are no blu-ray drives slim enough to fit into the Envy 14, ditto for the 1TB HDD.

LOL. That's a cool link. Going to have to borrow that sometime.

But, yeah, as Nu_d pointed out, 9.5 mm is the standard height for notebook drives. I didn't recall reading about a 9.5mm h, 2.5" HDD @ 1TB capacity. Thought it may have just come out in the last couple of days and I missed it. Been busy reading up on the hybrid HDDs.

The Envy 17 has space for 2 12.5mm drives. Since WD and Toshiba manufacture 1 TB 12.5mm drives, there is the capacity for 2 TB. However HP does not offer that configuration, you must do it yourself

As for the question on why the 17 doesn't have the radiance display. It is probably because of the cost and power it would take. It is much easier to implement it in smaller notebooks than in larger ones.

But even though it's not radiance, the screen is still sure to be plenty bright. The Full HD screen is rated at 300 nits, which is really good for a screen of that size. I'm guessing the quality of the 1080p will be on par or better than the screen of the Asus G73, but not quite RGBLED or Dreamcolor status.

    Anyone actually try this yet?

I ask because HDX Dragon owners were interested in the 750GB 12.5mm drives that came out last year but measurements did not appear to comfortably fit the drive. So no one actually bothered.

I am pretty certain it can house two 12.5mm 1TB HDDs. In fact, with the 1.5TB Toshibas coming out soon, it means that the ENVY 17 would have a HDD capacity of 3TBs!

Alright then, a more valid source, the service manual for the Envy 17, lists the 12.5mm height drives as being compatible:

    See page 3.

I've posted this before too, but in my exp with the envy 15... If you want to setup your own dual HDD configuration for 2/3TB I'd highly recommend speccing out the notebook from HP with a DUAL hdd setup and swapping the drives. If you don't do this, I think you're going to be missing a HDD caddy and sata cable (?) that you would have to source through other, possibly more expensive means.

Deleted By MOD - once was enough with that "let me google that for you" link.

Or you could just check the Envy 17 Service Manual = http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c02160120.pdf

Dude, one of the major selling points of the Envy 17 is the bigger drive bays which accommodate 12.5mm HDD's ...... savvy !!

And why would anybody NOT want more storage ?? !!

All true - but a "top of the range" model should not be cutting corners like this ...... WWAN would be very useful to a lot of people and GPS has many other uses over and above just car sat nav ......

If that's the case then they shoulda made it available as an option ......

Humans "need" food, water, air ...... everything else is a "want" !!

Change DPI setting = problem solved ......

If the engineers at HP made it a priority to fit these (very slightly!) bigger drives in to the Envy 14 - then it would have been done, but of course they didn't ...... cos they want us to buy the next revision which does !!

Anyway, I foresee the 12.5mm format slowly becoming the norm as people will keep wanting higher and higher storage capacities ...... plus the new "hybrid" drives would love the extra space to squeeze in some NAND ......

Now my next question ...... why didn't HP give the Envy line Touchscreens !! :D

Well cost is a non-issue as people who are willing to spend thousands on a high end desktop replacement will be in the market to spend a little more for the best screen ...... and power wise, the bigger Envy 17 packs more juice than the Envy 14 ......

My man. I said either the drives won't fit, then I gave you the reason why,and I then said "OR" and told you why, in case the drives actually do fit, as is the case. So to answer your question, they apparently felt that 1TB of storage is enough in a laptop. You asked. I answered.

It's a DTR laptop. I mean. You wanted an answer to a question. Just because you don't like the answers doesn't mean they are wrong. They figured a laptop that probably won't move more than a few feet away from a desk doesn't need WWAN/GPS. For instance, they don't have GPS units on televisions for a similar reason. Don't find GPS on washing machines either. But you do find GPS on a cell phone.

Ok. Go hit HP for not offering it as an option. You might feel better.

My point about the screen, is that, 1920x1080 makes text too small. There's a reason nobody offers a 1080p screen on anything less than ~15.4in. DPI or not...it's just the way it is. Everything will be really small. I'm sure it will strain the eyes. Would you want a 1080p screen on your next phone? Who am I kidding. Of course you do.

Ah. I'm sure making the Envy as slim as possible was more important to them than including blu-ray.

Don't think they intentionally left out blu-ray so ppl buy the next revision. Blu-ray isn't exaclty a "must-have" feature. Besides, they would just buy an external drive if it's that important to them.

Ya. I think you might be off your ritalen. Sound like a 12 year-old asking "why" "why" "why" "why" "why" in an SNL sketch.

    haha. :p I kid I kid

G'luck my man finding the perfect laptop. :)
