I bought the following configuration two weeks ago and love it:

    AMDAthalon 62 3200+
    1280MB Ram
    128 Meg ati
    80 Gig 4200
    WinXP home

I'm able to play HL2, EE II with zero problems. You can't beat it for the price. I will admit, this is an upgrade from a Compaq 1525US, so it's a major improvement. It's allot cheaper than a Dell XPS or Alienware Area 51. Am I missing something?

I never adjusted them after installing, but here are what the game says everything is set on:

    1024 X 768
    Aspect: Normal
    Model: Med
    Texture detail: Med
    Water detail: Reflect World
    Shadow detail: High
    Antialiasing mode: None
    Filtering mode: Trilinear
    Shader detail: High
    vertical sync: Disabled

    Plays with no noticable issues.

What resolution and video settings did you use to play HL2?

Try changing your HL2 aspect to widescreen. 1280x800 will put a little more stress on the GPU but it should handle it.

When you start HL2 go into the options and then click on advanced. Check the box that says allow developer console. The push the "~" key (obviously without the quotes) and you should see a little dialog box pop up. type in the box "find showfps" (once again without the quotes). It shoyld show you a few diferent command you can use. The one you are looking for is something like "showFPS 2" or "drawFPS 3" with 2 letters followed by a underscore before the string (ex. "cs_showFPS 2" or "cg_drawFPS 2")or something like that. Type that in and then start playing HL2 like you would any other time and up in the right hand corner you should see some numbers. The one you want is the one that is followed by FPS. The numbers will change so give a range of numbers that you recieve. If you could do this for me i would greatly appreciate it.

Ps. if you cant understand what it is that i am trying to say then type something like "show FPS in HL2" in google and find the command to show the FPS from there.

    Cheers!

oh, also when playing games this lappy remains surprisingly cool. not hot parts. with heavier apps (games) a second fan turns on and vents out at the right.. warm air on your hands lol..

anyways.. my only complaint is that this has the worst glare ever. how am i suppoed to use this in the daytime with windows and lights surrounding meh~?!?

well basically the more FPS, the better the game is performing. FPS actually stands for Frames Per Second. So it is kinda like the speed the game is performing at.

I would have to say that from all the down-talk i am hearing about this machine, these FPS scores here here are plenty to get a smooth gaming experience out of this lappy. Now i wasnt expecting to play doom3 on this, so it is great to know that i can play HL2!

    Thank you very much robcope!

Also, robcope, if you wanted to get a higher FPS score then you could decrease the quality of things like shadows and water detail. This will give you better performance, but less quality. It all depends on the personal preference. If AA of AF are on, you could also turn them down/off to provide great performance increases as well.

Im with Robcope on this one. I'm not a gamer at all, but I wanted to find out what everyone was talking about. So I installed the Doom 3 demo from their website. Which I never played before. I ran it and started playing it. I was waiting for something to happen, like for it to freeze up or my computer to explode or something. But it ran. I continued to play it to the next room where you go to the "underground" dungeon. (I must admit this game is addictive.) And I didn't notice anything except an occasional "click" in the audio. I looked at the setting and it was set to the lowest quality. I tried out all the setting medium, high, i didn't try the highest quality cuz it gives you a warning about having "500 megs." I'm not sure what that means cuz i'm not a gamer so I didn't do that one. But it ran. Is there something I'm missing? I read all these reviews about this laptop and benchmarks and stuff. But I can't find any proof of how "bad" this laptop is.

ok so i retract my last post. I understand what everyone is talking about. There is definitely lag on the game whenever there is a lot of things going on. it tends to skip or jump. oh well.. i wish i never played this game. cuz it is fun! :)

i'm curious what the regular widescreen looks like. when i got the brightview screen, i could definitely do without the glare. It's annoying.
