I just rebooted my laptop and noticed that no sound came on startup. I went on to play a video on cnn.com and no sound either. Suspected its a driver corruption problem so uninstalled sound card, rebooted and reinstalled driver from HP site. Still no sound from laptop speakers

Works fine with headphones so not sure what the issue is...I sort of regret upgrading to Vista now

There was a problem with the 2000 and 6000 series where a transistor would short out on the audio input board therefore causing the speakers to not work. All you can do is try reinstalling the OS, with the driver. IF that doesn't work then you will have to send it in to be repaired which shouldn't take long as it's as simple as opening it up and popping in the new audio input board. I had this on two dv6000t notebooks and personally worked with a HP Hardware engineer to classify and fix the transistor problem which it sounds like you have.

    Thanks Airman...

So I understand that you are saying that it is a hardware issue correct? If so, how would reinstalling the OS help (I just did reinstalled Vosta on Sunday and it is a major PITA!)

Do you know what part I would need to DIY?

Issue is, although I bought my laptop in the US, I am currently in school in Europe and will not be going back stateside anytime soon makingh shipping both costly and expensive!!

Well reinstalling Vista and the driver would just be to make sure that it's a hardware problem, as there are other factors that would cause the audio to cease functioning.

I do know what part you would need but you would have to take the entire notebook apart to replace it thus voiding your warranty.

I say at this point just use either external speakers/headphones till you return to the US.

There are some posts about sound not working after an upgrade to Vista. If you have the Waikiki sound chip and you have the wrong drivers I believe that on resume (after hibernation or sleep) the sound no longer works. I suggest digging around in this form, perhaps searching for Waikiki (there is also an explanation on identifying which sound chip you have).

Good luck and enjoy the EU :)

Issue is my laptop is US but I reside abroad and will not be returning anytime soon....

I have the venice chipset not waikiki and checked all software issues...my headphones work so it can't be a sound driver issue ; )
