I think i'm going to get the new dm4x laptop from America (somehow) as the UK site shows the old generation dm4 as 'new'! So I don't want to buy anything that's already outdated.

Anyways, I'll have to get it from the American site but if gets broken or anything (even if its a few years down the line) will the UK HP repair it or not? Can the American one only repair it because I got it from there...

What if I buy insurance from the UK HP for the laptop too, will it cover me then?

I really want this laptop, its perfect for me as I want it for uni (nothing else compares) but also a bit of light gaming too and I start uni in September and I'm not going to America before hand.

You should call HP and ask, however, the way I understand it is that a USA warranty is only good in the USA. That said, IF UK HP will sell you a warranty for a USA laptop, then it SHOULD cover it. However, that is a big *IF*. Don't just go to their UK website and buy the extended warranty... as I am sure they will send it to you, but it may not be attachable to your laptop. Call HP UK and see what they say.

(PS. That's an educated assumption on my part, so please check it out rather than trust my guess)

BTW, I would guess that the new dm4x will be available in the UK within a few weeks. Like all companies and electronics that are made worldwide, introduction in different countries are staggered. You would be better served if you wait and see.

Ok, thanks, i'll check it out altho im sure you are right, unfortunatly :/

But, why would they list the old dm4 as new on the UK website and then bring out the new dm4x in the next few weeks, surely they should have either listed the dm4 much earlier or skipped it altogether...?

I haven't ever been on the UK HP shopping page before tonight, but it appears to me that they don't offer CTO builds there??? The laptops shown are what we call quick-ship models in the states. The dm4-1300ea does indeed seem to be a new quick-ship model - I see reviews from mid-June. However, the dm4-1xxx series seems to be around in the UK since last fall. It is my guess that it's that specific model of dm4 that may be new to the UK HP site???

Just remember that no matter where these sell, they are all made in the same plant in Shanghai, so it's just a matter of time before the most recent line hits the UK. It would cost too much to keep two separate productions going. I bet these were all made in the last few weeks, so they need to try to sell them out before moving to the next generation. Hopefully for you it will be sooner than later. Yet, I know how you feel --- waiting... ;) I did the same waiting for the dv7-6xxx to come out in dual core.

PS. If you look on the USA site, you'll see that they have both the dm4-1000 and the dm4-2000 in the quick-ship list. No doubt they still have inventory of 1000s.

My first impression of whether or not that HP UK would fix an American-CTO notebook would be a huge damn "no".

Both the U.S. and UK have different governing bodies concerning electronics as well as different regulations that monitor their use. Hence, parts used in the U.S. models may (and do) vary from those used elsewhere. The reason being so that they comply with those regulatory bodies. A U.S. electronics device is compliant with the FCC. Not by whatever angency it is that does so outside it's territories. HP UK cannot perform a repair on a device that does not comply with the rules and regulations of it's governing body. That is, not unless the U.S. and UK have something worked out somewhere.

It is definitely worth checking out to find the answer for certain, but my gut still screams "no".
