    Hello,
I recently got a dv5t and want to upgrade the memory. Before I do, I just want to make sure that doing this won't void the warranty I purchased with the laptop (I got the 3-year Accidental Damage with Pick-Up and Return warranty). Also, does it matter if I use memory bought from HP or can I just buy something a bit cheaper off of Newegg?

    Thanks!

No it will not. You can use any compatible memory.

Are you sure Lithus? HP informed that if I upgrade my memory by using non-HP recommended sticks, my warranty will be void. They can't guarantee that the memory sticks will be compatible with the laptop. And so if any problem occurs, they won't repair it.

However you can use any cheap RAM stick. Just make sure you plug in your old sticks back to the laptop before handing it over to HP for repair or service.

Well, you can replace it without voiding the warranty, but the warranty doesn't cover the ram that you put. If you ever do send it back for repairs you have to put in the original ram that came with the laptop. Just buy some ram from newegf, it's cheaper. I'm selling some used ones if your interested. Check my sig.

    Here's the run down...

    1) Changing out RAM will NOT void warranties
    2) The new RAM will not be covered under your warranty nor will they service your laptop unless you have the original configuration and even then, it's not a normal issue to run into
    3) The only way for HP to void your warranty, regardless of what type you have, would be if they can directly identify that the reason the part that failed and needs fixed or replaced was directly affected and caused to die by the RAM you replaced.

Wont void the warranty.. its not like they can find out anyway.

Besides RAM is a CRU part (customer replace/repairable unit)

How about the HDD? I'm looking forward to replace the original Hard Drive with a new 7200rpm HDD.

That shouldn't be much of a problem either, right?

nope, aslong as you put them back before you send it in to hp if you need support or assistance...

Be aware that when changing HD's you will need to use a caddy. Its best you buy a spare one..

Its a housing interface to fit a HD into the notebooks HD compartment.

A drive itself wont just go straight in. It needs a housing and proper connector.

You can just re-use the one from the older drive. The drive is connected to the caddy using a few screws. Fairly easy to swap.

Hmm... I sold off my drive from my new dv5t. Will they really not fix anything else on the laptop if I don't have my original drive in?

If my CPU or screen fail down the line, am I outta luck if I have a non-HP dvd drive? Seems like nonsense if you ask me. Is there documentation for this?

You should have read the HP Limited Warranty Policy before you have done that.

They will not repair anything that didnt come from them. Due to many reasons like.. its not their hardware or whatever you put in there could be causing or caused the issue. They will give you an option to return it back to you till you put the back the stock parts or charge you excessively to fix it w/o warranty cover.

You can probably get away with the HD though

CS are idiots, ignore them. I get different answers every time i call.

Practically impossible for them to know that you changed the RAM

Like many have mentioned it doesn't void your warranty but if you send your laptop in for repair, make sure to re-insert the old one cause there is a case that they might take out you upgrades which they are fully entitled to do.
