I've read a lot of posts about guys formatting their HD's on brand new notebooks to get rid of "bloatware", and then doing a clean install of the OS.

Will this void a warranty or cause problems with support from HP?

Good. That's the first thing I'll do when I get my notebook.

You've only got a 90 day warranty anyways so it's not like you're really losing anything.

On losing support thru HP during that time.... that's debatable..... depending on "who" you get they could give you problems...

You may want to run it a few days, to make sure it's not hardware defective....

PS: Make SURE to make a DVD of the files in the c:\SwSetup folder

I also copied any "HP" app I saw plus made a full copy the registry, plus sections of it pertaining to HP apps such as QuickPlay.

90 days is for software support, 1 year is for hardware

Not sure about the 90 warranty for software, but no you will not void the 1 year warranty. Though, if you do send it in for repair, it will (except in some rare circumstances, or if you put it in writing that you do not want your data erased) be re-imaged to factory installation. Even if the issue is not with your hard drive or software.

    Hmmm... Costco website says:
    1-year limited H/W warranty
    90-day S/W warranty

    HP site says:
    Standard warranty features:

One year parts and labor, including return of equipment to HP and authorized service provider options
One year of convenient 24x7 toll-free technical support in English or Spanish: 1-800-474-6836 (1-800-HP invent)
One-hour e-mail assistance and real-time chat via a built-in Help and Support Center
Easy-to-use website providing quick access to product diagnostics, FAQs, and top solutions
For software, 30-day replacement of defective application media and one year of toll-free technical assistance

Ok, this may be a stupid question but what about re-installing windows, but returning your laptop within the 21 day period? Will they still accept it?

well 21 is within 90 days so yes. And Costco has a better policy about Hp's then anyone. If it brakes that will give you a new one.
