Hi .. I am planning on buying HP DV6700 series laptop but before that i have a question :

Will triple booting (ubuntu, xp, vista) void warranty?

If it does I will have to drop HP and get something else as I cant live without this setup. Which brand can i go with then ?

    Regards

Shouldn't. But if you need technical assistance they will only give it on the O.S. that came installed from the factory.

It's shouldn't, but don't expect support for linux. I don't think they offer it. Also, here's the update on that thread you posted:

HP is committed to supporting its customers and backs its PCs with a solid hardware warranty regardless of the operating system.

If a customer alters a product and a problem develops as a result of that change, then the problem (which is not a result of a defect in workmanship) would not be covered under the warranty. In the case at hand, if the problem was the physical keys on the notebook beginning to stick, the operating system change would not have been the culprit and, therefore, would be covered under the customer’s warranty.

We are also taking steps to ensure support agents are clear on this policy so this issue does not recur.

There are two warranties on a computer: hardware and software.
The (limited) hardware warranty usually states that the manufacturer will repair any parts that fail during the warranty period.
The ( extremely limited) software warranty, in most cases, only provides the means to restore the computer's operating system to its newly purchased state. Some companies, like HP, use a restore partition and/or optical media to do this. Others, like Dell, include a Windows CD/DVD and a driver CD with their system.

So, in other words, do what you want with the software... and be prepared to re-do it all if there is a hardware failure.

Limited warranty only covers hardware. If you have a problem, HP will just ask you to do a factory restore install to rule out a software issue

Ok, i get the point. But i have read somewhere (dont remember the exact page) that many users had ubuntu and DELL didnt complain about it when they sent the laptops.

So if HP cant deal with , that would be a huge disappointment as i m not doing Disk image save and restore each time i send laptop for servicing.

Get a spare HD and use that instead to tripple boot. So if you need to send the notebook back to HP, you can just put back the stock HD

Hey OP, in what order do you plan on installing OS's in the triple-boot? Im planning on the exact same thing (but with a Dell-see specs). Should be fun to try out...

Edit (just to be on topic): dont worry about the warranty; it applies only to hardware. these guys are right.
