Hi my sister just bought a HP dv6205us laptop and the circuit city guy charges 130 for additional 512mb ram installed. The laptop comes with 512mb ram already. The salesperson said you would have to upgrade the ram there (to keep warranty) and if you upgrade the ram yourself it would void the warranty. I don't believe that I thought upgrading the cpu or hard drive would void your warranty and not the ram yourself. I kept arguing with him, I think they are lying? am I right?

No...they just want to make more money. As long as you do not damage the notebook in the process (I really can't imagine how someone would) you're fine.
FYI, you can also upgrade the hard drive without ill effects as well. -
But the salesman at CC saying that you must have the install done there is full of BS. You can probably bring it to a small mom&pop computer service shop and have them install it for like $20; make sure they're certified though. I always do the installs myself though. -
Yea, I can install the ram myself. I knew they are trying to make more money. The guy says there is a sensor or a seal that detects if you have installed a memory into the slot and it will void your warranty unless done by one of their technicians. lol damn ppl were not that stupid

Only things that void warranty are changing out CPU and I think miniPCI card, besides opening up the entire darn thing.
I'm not sure if they are able to tell if you tampered with it buy changing something like the CPU, as there isn't much of any way to tell unless they use something like special tape, etc... -
Oh yea do you guys know what kind of ram I need to buy for my laptop. Is there a specific brand I need to buy?

it varies by manufacturer as to whether swapping the miniPCI card voids the warranty I think Dell lets you swap the miniPCI card and add or remove the bluetooth module if you want... Keeping the old one to put back in is always a good idea. Anyway RAM is usually considered a user-serviceable or upgradeable component and as such does not void most warranties. The MacBook Pro is a big exception, since I think you void your warranty by opening the RAM slot.
Will upgrading dv6205us memory void warranty?
