I haven't purchased the DV6TQE yet, but I saw the news about HP might spin off the PC business. Is it a bad thing to buy HP laptops/pc's now?

    What do you think?

I returned two DV6's due to various issues. No way would I buy another HP. got myself a Sager instead. Runs cools, it's fast; just cost a lot more, but that's life. :)

What HP eventually does with its PC division has no impact on whether or not one should buy a current HP laptop. Whichever company buys the PC division from HP will still have to honor all warranties and the laptops themselves obviously won't change once they're in our hands.

Look at what happened when Lenovo bought IBM's PC business: the ThinkPads eventually changed, but the people who bought them earlier were not affected. Since HP doesn't really have a signature style like IBM did, it won't even matter than much.

I would still consider it. The news is "might" and that's in the next 12-18 months. When IBM left the PC market, everything was still supported by Lenovo. I would expect the same here.

Yes.....I would. I feel I got a good computer for a reasonable price. I believe that is why most on here who have one.... bought one ;) .

The dv7/6 are well priced laptops that perform very well. They are perfectly capable machines and this shouldn't have any impact on that.

    Cool unrelated story bro!! :p

It's kind of funny that you need to keep on justifying your choices instead of moving on. As well, as I recall, the second dv6t you received was fine except for the switchable graphics issue. Unfortunately for you, you didn't have enough patience to wait it out.

You are not getting a 2 years gym membership. Its a laptop. How is a spinoff of their PC division or whatever they decide to do in 1-2 years time gonna affect the laptop you buy today?

If you are worried about their customer service, i think the least that HP wants is to screw up their own rep before selling their business

I am not sure there will be one if they are just selling off their PC business.

I think it is funny that so few actually understand the meaning of a "corporate spin-out," try running that in Google and read about it, because the spin-out does not mean HP's computer division will be stopping production/support or will even be sold.

It will probably happen in the same way IBM sold off their PC business. Thinkpads are still remarkable machines and haven't varied from their original concept except for improvements.

Here's a new post from HP which i found on their twitter page.

    HP: A Toast to Opportunity

and as for buying a notebook from them, i'd say yes.
Like a lot of members said, the news doesn't really affect the consumer.

Okay, guys, let's try to stay on topic--a bunch of posts have been removed. If you have nothing useful to contribute, keep it in your head and refrain from dumping it on the forum. If a mod has to come in here and clean up again, official warnings/infractions will be given. Thank you.

This. Many tech sites have speculated the same, though who will buy HP's PC division is another discussion. Rumors of Samsung being interest in Q1 have been referenced, though I am hoping a smaller tech company looking to enter the PC manufacturing game will come along and snatch up HP PSG.

    Maybe HTC? Who knows.

Several months of waiting was plenty. At some point, common sense has to take over and realize that I can't wait forever for HP to get their act together. Or AMD.

Why a smaller tech company? Just out of curiosity.

    Stay on topic, Dave.

I'd like to see some new thinking. Put the "invent" back into HP. I'd rather see a smaller tech company looking to get into the PC business acquire HP PSG rather than one already in it. Though I'd have no issue if Samsung splurged to snatech them up. I'd like to see HTC grow, expand their current borders.

It would be funny to see Google snap it up, just for the sake of messing with Apple and MS.
