I downloaded SP2 from MS website and tried to installed on my R3000Z. Everything went smoothly until the computer tried to restart itself, a blue screen flashed by briefly telling something was wrong with some hardware issue and then it shut itself down and tried to reload, then back and forth several times like this. Finally I lost patience and used the OS CD to repair Windows. Took me another hour to restore the system to normal condition (of course, it's SP1 now). Seems like there are tech people working for HP in this forum, any idea?
I installed SP2 on my almost 2 year old Dell, it didn't have any problem at all. Is it another catch that HP/Compaq plays?

FWIW, I upgraded from WinXP SP2 RC2 to SP2 final via Windows Update without incident.

Do you have BIOS R.12 flashed in? If not, do that and try installing SP2 again. Also, if you have two SODIMMs installed run http://www.memtest.org for at least half an hour to verify that you're not having memory compatibility issues, but I suspect you either needed R.12 or had something installed that SP2 disagreed with.

Thanks brianstretch for the input. My BIOS is F.11, I just flashed it using the softpaq. I guess the BIOS could be not compatible to SP2, but not sure, so I'll wait until the so called "optimized" update is available.
But you said you updated your system using Windows update, how did you do that? Up until today, MS still only has the big file for IT pros to install on mutiple computers.

I would assume that since I was already running SP2 RC2 that Microsoft wanted to use us beta testers to help make sure that Windows Update would work for everyone still running SP1.

By rights the full SP2 offline update you have should be the safest way to go. I do know that new Microsoft OS's often require updated BIOSes, and SP2 is nearly equivalent to an OS update, so flashing in the latest BIOS first is a Good Idea. Other than that, just make sure your virus scanner is disabled and hope for the best.

I have the same problem with my R3000Z. I traced it to a
UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP_M (1000007f) error but nothing I tried fixes it. I don't know what to do at this point. The problem doesn't seem to be with any particular driver.

I would recommend to wait the update on http://www.hp.com/go/windowsxp to see if HP has any updates for the drivers. Did you restore your OS after the unsuccessful upgrade?

Yeah. I restored it. Unfortunately, I'm not sure how quick HP will take to come up with a fix, if they even decide to do so at all. I'm stuck with SP1 until then. If someone else has a workaround, that would be just dandy.

    I SOLVED IT!!!! [8D][8D][8D][8D]

After a few weeks of on and off testing, I narrowed it down to the culprit. Zone alarm pro was cauasing the stop error. This only happaned afterI upgraded to SP2. Unfortunately, I could not get it to work with ZoneAlarm or the Computer Associates branded Version, EZ firewall. I switched to Sygate Personal Firewall and its working fine.

If you upgrade to SP2 and are getting a restart when booting up windows or a stop error BSOD, restart in safemode and uninstall zonealarm.

That could be the cause of problem in my computer too because I also have ZA pro installed. But I just read an article from eWeek, it says Visual Studio.net and many other software are not compatible with SP2, so I still have to wait for the patches before I migrate the system over. It's odd that my Dell didn't have any problem even when ZoneAlarm was on.
