I just finished doing a clean install with the help of velocity's clean install guide. Everything is normal, but I have "unkown devices" in my device manager. Also, the touch sensitive volume control above my keyboard works, but the graphics that pop up on the screen while adjusting the volume are not there anymore.
I have a brand new DV6T 1300 CTO, and here is the HP driver webpage. http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?os=4063&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&product=3999445
Does anyone know which drivers I probably need to update? Has anyone experienced this?
Here is a Screen shot of my device manager:

I called HP support thinking they wouldn't care if I did a clean install. The rep was sort of a jerk. He told me I need to buy a $30 recovery disk from them. I told the rep all I needed to fix was 2 little things, which arn't worth $30 in the first place. I mentioned the HP drivers webpage and asked if he would point out which drivers I probably needed to download to fix my problems, but he wouldn't tell me. He kept giving me the run around.
P.S. I did create both a backup disc and a recovery set before I did a clean install.

I recommend DriverMax. Amazing program.

Or simply go to HP's website for drivers. -
Base System Device = Card reader, find the drivers on HP's site. The other one is probably HP ProtectSmart.
If you really need that volume OSD, it's HP QuickTouch responsible with it. Personally i found it to lag like hell and crash some games, but each with their own. -
As a practical means to fixing/overcoming this, I typically take a moment to rehearse what it is I want to say before the rep gets on the phone (chat line etc.) That way, it saves time and helps to alleviate much of the misunderstanding that can take place during the discourse. In addition, I always try and be polite.
Even though you are the customer, it's not the fault of the rep who takes your complaint when something doesn't go as expected. That said, don't let any rep give you the runaround; if you know what it is you need and he is not responding to your request, by all means ask to speak to his supervisor. -
Also, I cannot find the Touchsmart driver for the life of me. It only directs me to the touch screen laptops. Is there not another driver that it could be? My touchsmart volume control doesn't lag at all. I know what you're talking about though, I have seen a video of it lagging on youtube.

Not sure, but I think this may be part of the Intel Low Pin Count (LPC) bus for legacy I/O devices. It is (should be) included with the chipset install. I couldnt find the DV6t drivers thread here at NBR but you can use this one from the DV4t. Its the same:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=405790
Download the Intel chipset driver and install it using the -overall command. From run, browse to the setup file in the extracted driver and add the overall command (i.e. setup.exe -overall). This will remove all traces of the old drivers and install the new ones. With a little luck this might clear your unknown device. -
It turns out I was missing the "Human Interface Devices"

Did you install the Intel chipset drivers? I have a feeling it's related to that.
-
I guess what I take away from this experience is that it's honestly not worth a clean install and the never ending search for missing drivers. It's better to just uninstall all the junk.
Thanks guys for all your help -
Hmm, i have running clean installs on both of my laptops since like... 2 weeks of owning them, and no unknown devices, no issues of any kind. I'll try to google a bit for you maybe i can find you a solution.

sometimes its just nice to actually see where your volume level is at without having to find an icon or something and click on it to see the level.
i found a solution to it though similar to the solution ^ -
Well you know that's exactly what the little tray icon shows, a visual indication.
And you don't have to click on it. Or maybe that's too subtle for you.
I agree that an OSD is useful in some cases but at least for me it did little else than get in the way, at least the HP one did so. It caused lots of trouble with fullscreen apps. -
the ODS was useful to me and did not cause any troubles with my HP or programs so I'm glad I now have a workaround that works for me.
to each his own. what works for one doesn't necessarily work for another -
I had the same issue with my Dv8T when I did my clean install...
Try this:
First,
To Fix unknown driver issue in device manager.
1. Downloaded file from here ( copy and paste, making a link doesn't work): " http://go.notebookreview.com/?id=525X832&url=http%3A%2F%2Fpcpitstop.com%2Flibraries%2Fdriver%2Fstoreinfo.asp%3Femail%3Dwindstrings%40gmail.com%26duid
%3D3288%26ddate%3DSat%2BMar%2B27%2B02%253A39%253A11%2BCDT%2B2010%26file%3Ddriver%26token%3D06f99d97bf9e98e5fede9a2a6c3f4433&sref=http%3A%2F%2Fforum.notebookreview.com%2Fshowthread.php%3Ft%3D471541"
2. And expand the .zip file " Chipset_Intel_XPVSW7_3264_infinst911" and run setup, it appears to install, but it really doesn't as it only expanded the files onto the computer and now you
have to install them manually.....
3. Go to device manager, double click the unknown driver and tell it you have your own disk
4. And go to update driver and browse my computer and "let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer"
5. And pick the name you know it is " Intel(R) PM55 Express Chipset LPC Interface Controller - 3B03"...
6. Reboot..... check device manager and the error is gone as the driver installed under "system devices".. it will be called "Intel(R) PM55 Express Chipset LPC Interface Controller - 3B03
You should see two entries.
Windows 7 "Clean Install", need help with unknown devices now
