with a new computer, hp dv6 on windows 7, i need to transfer windows xp files over.
so it's sort of like drag and drop, except wirelessly.

the windows xp is a desktop with a router configured and the laptop configured to use the router for wireless access...

ive been trying to understand how all this works, but i cannot simply manage to access windows xp, or using windows xp to access windows 7!

    can anyone help??

i have a cat5 cable if that is needed... but i dont know what to do with it..
Even if it's not wireless and with the CAT5 cable, i am willing as long as it gets transferred, i just prefer wireless

and i think i rea that Homegroup is not compatible with Windows XP so what do I use??

it's also confusing that in my Network Map on windows 7, it does not pick up the shared documents folder on my desktop.

    thanks for any help given|!
    : )

    things to try:

    - disable firewall on both machines (temporarily, of course)

    - map a drive from one machine to the other using administrative credentials.

that should do it. another thing to try - from either machine, ping the other one. this way we can at least ascertain that they both exist on the network :D

thanks for your answer, what do you mean by ping the other one?

your second bullet point confuses me, very sorry

and under Network -> PC Name -> Users (share) -> there is my folder with pictures, desktop, etc on it. does that mean it can be accessed by anyone connected to my network??

Ughh, Windows has never made it easy to share your files. The problem has always been the interface provided too many options for the average home user.

    http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-7/share-files-and-printers-between-windows-7-and-xp/

Your second question, does that mean your files can be accessed by anyone connected to your network. Not necessarily. By default, only the folders with the label "public" in them can be seen by the other users on your network. Now if you've been messing with the Network settings that most likely you don't understand, then all bets are off...........

    hey thanks
nah, ive been experimentign with thigns i know lol..

well in the end, i tried the microsoft trouble shooter
and it made some solutions and told me to retry whatever i was doing
and surprisingly, under Homegroup, my original XP comptuer showed up but it's failing to expand it, diagnose does nothing...
mayeb it's the fact that im 3-4 feet away from my G router behind 2 walls, kind of weak lol

however i will try the guide thank you so much, i'v been looking for a specific one!|

Try the guide. It's pretty helpful. We can tailor it to your specific situation if you just post whatever steps you are stumbling on.

    okay thanks

the guide says "Now if you go into Network in Windows 7 you should see your XP machine and the Windows 7 as well which in this case is Mysticgeek-PC."

i can see my XP computer, but it cannot expand, because of an error "Network path cannot be found"
that is the first step i believe i need to complete prior to transferring

humm, network path cannot be found...... Could mean like 10000000000000000000000000000000 things.

I assume they are both under Workgroup. Now we gotta go through the whole gauntlet of diagnostics. If only you had teamviewer installed......

I assume you can access the computers by IP address? Write down the XP computer's IP address. Then from the Windows 7 computer, ping the computer.

Next, make sure the folder on the XP machine is being shared. The easiest way IMO, is to make a new folder called "Public." Right click it and under properties click Sharing. Share it with everyone and make sure they have full control if you are planning on transferring files from the 7 machine to the XP machine. Otherwise read only is enough.

    Try it now.

hm there is a Shared Documents folder but i have to look into those settings, if that doesnt work, then i'll make a new folder with new setttings.
    Thank you

    do you mean ping 192.xxx.xx.x?

Yeah, ping it just to make sure your network is working just fine. Also, to make it easy, turn off the firewall. We'll make an exception later.

    k thanks
    well i ping-ed it

it said Pinging with 32 bytes of data:
    Request timed out.
    Request timed out.
    Request timed out.
    Request timed out.

    Ping statistics:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 (100% Loss)

    oh and a qiuck update.
that computer that i thought was the XP computer was actually my brother's laptop...

anyawy i went to my XP desktop and changed the workgroup name to the default WORKGROUP and it picked up on my laptop.
still the same problem persists, as it wont open because of the same exact error

But you can ping it I assumed.

And the firewalls are turned off.

On XP, go under Control panel, should be near the bottom.

Under 7, type firewall into the Start Menu search and it should pull up.

And you've checked the folder's share settings. It is also immensely easier if you use the Share wizard. By default it is on, but if it is off, go under Explorer. Menu bar/ Tools /Folder Options. Click the Tab View, then scroll all the way down and the Share wizard option should be checked. Makes it immensely easier to change a folder's share settings.

    XP firewall off
windows 7 firewall cannot be turned off :| as norton is keeping the settings..
but i made sure file and printer sharing was excepted in home + public
for Homegroup, the Public box could not be checked as an exception..

Share wizard option is on, (previously was on.)
ill try again with the share wizard

That's ok. As long as you can ping it, you can access the computer by typing into the Explorer adress bar, \\192.xxx.xxx.xxx with the IP address of the other computer. If the share settings are correct on the XP computer and the share settings correct on the windows 7 computer is correct, then something is blocking the packets...

Either that or the share settings are wrong...

do you have Password protection on or off on the 7 machine?

hm, simply pinging it through windows explorer doesnt help :(
xp ip address just does not load, they claim it';s a naming problem

password protection for Router? or for computer

Password protection under the Network and sharing center.

If you can't access it using \\192.xxx.xxx.xxx under explorer then we got network connectivity issues.

But you said you can ping it right? Like under the command prompt.

And both firewalls + norton is disabled?

    Edit:

This would be so much easier with Teamviewer.....

there is no pass, firewalls, + norton disabled,
i can ping it in cmd..

it definitely sounds like a network connectivity issue.
but the problem is, if it is a connectivity issue, why was my laptop able to pick it up in the first place?

    lol teamviewer idk
