Hey everyone. I did a windows update and, ofcourse, problems occurred. My mute button on the computer stays red now whether mute or not. I've heard similar incidents happen and the solution is to just reinstall the driver. Problem is, I'm not sure what driver to reinstall.

    Any help?

Yes Windows Update installed the wrong driver. It always does this. Dont use WU to update hardware drivers.

Go to the HP website > Driver & Support and download the proper audio driver for your model.

And you can selectively uninstall WUs. If Vista, it's Control Panel > Windows Update > Update History.

Well, I didn't purposely try to update hardware driver. WU just launched automatically. Also, I went to WU history, and the updates that were installed only were security updates. So, im not sure why its happening.

Ah. Well, that's part of why I have my WU set to manual. It notifies me, and I choose to install. ;)

Same thing happened to me. They're just windows security updates. I'm just going to uninstall all of them that was installed today.

I had the same probelm after WU updated my HP dv5. Even though the mute button was red I still had sound so I figured it wasn't the audio drivers.

I installed the latest drivers from HP for the HP Quick Launch buttons and it seemed to rectify the issue.

    Cheers...

I had something similar to Petty Rocks happen -- after the Microsoft updates my Quick Launch volume button went red, but I decided that I would just leave it as it was (I kinda liked the red light, and I always use my volume/mute button in the task bar anyway) -- but a couple of days later, the Quick Launch volume control was back to normal. I'm not sure what that was about, but I'm glad the problem righted itself. Did that happen to anyone else?
