If I CHECK for updates using windows update, my next reboot shows a screen where it says "updates 3 of 3 are installing" and it stays at 0% then shuts down and restarts itself...so basically I cannot check or install new updates. I tried system restoring to my earliest date and it still happens. I know windows update recently installed Windows Update Agent 7.2.6001.784. I believe mine got corrupted somehow so I tried to reinstall it from Microsoft. Here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949104 . I tried to install it but I get an error saying "Install failed with following error number:0x80073712." What can I do?
This is the error I get from Problems Reports and Solution. And I think their related.

i believe it is supposed to shut down at 3 of 3 at 0%. Because i just turned on my laptop and it continued to update my windows after i turned it on. It started from 3 of 3 at 0% and finished installing

No, this is different. There is no updates being installed. If I just do a simple check for updates and no updates are available and I reboot, this problem occurs. And like I said, when it starts up after the loading screen, it goes to that 3 of 3 screen stays at 0% then says Welcome then says Shuts Down, and it will repeat this process unlimited time until I press F5 and do a system restore to stop this from happening.

I tried repair start up, didn't do anything. And I don't have a vista install cd. Plus I don't get that. How would that be any different than a regular system restore?
