So im getting an hp dv6000t shipped to my house, i bought it from hp.com... and they gave me a free upgrade to windows vista. Does anyone know when exactly this comes out to the public, and when i could get the upgrade?
Thanks.

it should be out by January 27th, according to Microsoft, so you may receive the upgrade soon
-
oh ok! awesome! thanks for the info.
hopefully it will not get delayed again, like it has been doing...
gosh they said it was coming out in november! -
around the end of january!
but also what i want to know how long will HP take to ship vista to us?
will it have bloatware on it too?
will the recovery discs work with vista or will they release a vista recovery disc some how?
drivers drivers drivers -
yeah i want to know that too....
but i dont think anyone will know, because i dont think anyone has already got theres shiped from hp yet... -
HP, rather (Microsoft) uses Moduslink to take Vista Upgrade orders, rest assured that you won't see your upgrade DVD for a long time.
Moduslink, after you provide your Proof of Purchase, UPC, Sales Receipt, Confirmation Number, and Windows XP COA will send you an email roughly a week later confirming your order to upgrade, if all provided information is correct, if it isn't then good luck.
The company is backlogged with 100,000 emails so don't expect an answer right away, I had issues with them while trying to order my upgrade kit for Vista Business, and they said the Kits (at best) would be shipping out in late March or more likely April, FAR from the Vista January 30th Launch Date.
The Recovery DVDs for your notebooks will work indeed after installing Vista, but they will bring your computer back to XP as you recieved it, obviously.
You get what you pay for in this world, and seeing as these Upgrade Kits are free, don't expect anything but low quality service from the providers. -
Also forgot to mention, that the Vista Upgrade Kits come with (1) a Vista Upgrade DVD, and (2) a Seperate HP drivers DVD.
-
wait so i wont get to upgrade till April!!!!????
NO WAY!!??
Wow that really sucks then... -
btw, as of now i have exactly 1 more post then you, including this post!
-
looks like I'm 1 up
Yeah it sucks for everyone, the Upgrade is through Microsoft (not) HP.
Moduslink is handling the upgrade for every major PC company that offers the program, also people that just bought xp that are entitled to the upgrade. So we are talking millions of people. -
oh wow.... well that kinda changes everything...
wow not getting vista till april...
see i was thinking that i would be able to get it by the end of this month... hmm...
i cant believe that they delayed it this much (originally was coming out November?) ... but now this? wow this sucks...
BTW, now we are even! -
hey also id give u more rep points, but it says i have to spread some reputation before giving it to you again...
yes i guess i was the only one that gave u rep points lol... -
And that Million will slow up all the delivery thing. Sometimes i wonder, why not HP get the upgrade and let the customer go to one of it's centre to claim the disc. This would be more efficient as well as easy for customer that don't like their credit card to be known to the entire world.
-
Aside from its main shipping center in Memphis, Tennessee, their repair center in Fremont, California, and their world headquarters in Palo Alto, California, there aren't any well known offices for HP in the US. And I doubt they'd want people showing up at their offices to pick up disks, because their offices weren't meant for retail dealings.
They simply gotta make do with what they have, which is what they (in accordance with Microsoft) are doing.
-
All these manufactures sucked in everybody on the Vista upgrade. The manufactures had no choice but to give everybody a free upgrade to vista. Microsoft missed the boat by not coming out with vista in November. Now all the manufactures have to give you the upgrade or nobody would be buying computers for the holidays. Now they have your money and you will be lucky to get the vista upgrade before May.

I plan to buy HP but when it has Vista on it.
When will we see HP with Vista on it? when will HP ship laptops with hd 7200 rpm? -
I guess in that thread, they got their upgrade "confirmed" but i guess it wont be shipped till later...
-
I would prefer that they don't give me the vista upgrade option and reduce the price by $100.
Or even better, as they do for business hp class notebook, comes with an option of FreeDos and reduce the price as well.
Why don't they do it for consumer class notebook? -
I too would like to know when HP will allow Custom To Order laptops to have Vista on them from the factory. I am thinking of taking my Lappy back to Costco due to some issues I'm having with it but I want to know if I should wait a little so I can order another one with Vista already on it. How long will I have to wait? Will the cost go up ? Currently the same laptop I got last month is already $150 cheaper and includes a free TV card. What to do, what to do.
-
I have a coupon book from costco and it has a 15.4 HP notebook 6253 with a $100.00 coupon for windows vista if purchased between feb28 and march 4th . I would think you would see windows vista computers and notebooks in stores starting in February. I wonder if the xp notebooks in stock will be a lot cheaper?
-
Yeah I saw that today when I was at costco during lunch. Seems that all laptops on the February coupons say Windows Vista as the operating system so I guess they will be available after January . I guess I'll wait a bit. I still can't pinpoint my issue but it seems that sometimes the laptop locks up where nothing can be clicked, closed or started yet mouse cursor works fine and pressing power will initiate shutdown. Very odd.
-
Yea, the best thing is to wait and buy notebook with Vista on it since the Vista upgrade will be based on XP.
Then I'll make another partition for DesktopBSD to play with it, and yes I'll buy one with Nividia instead of ATI since Nividia has better support and video drivers for FreeBSD, and Linux as well. -
- Bought Toshiba notebook with FREE Vista upgrade end of Dec/06.
- Been trying for over 4 weeksto get free upgrade via Moduslink - even had MS Customer Relations girl try to get the Moduslink form to work and it failed for her as well.
- Was verbally told that Moduslink supervisor would receive my details and get back within 1 or 2 days - that was 2 weeks ago!
- Have opened Case# with Toshiba and have also faxed their head office - DEAD SILENCE! NO REPLIES!
Bottom line - Vista is DRM loaded and bloated Pig with lipstick on. I may never use it but fully expect the FREE upgrade promised for when I want to try it out.
This FIASCO has one significant result - I'm installing LINUX dual boot ASAP.
Seems the more I spend money on technology in recent years, the more I'm disappointed. Used to be an exciting thing getting new gadgets and buying new technology - now it's ripe with dissappointements and is frequently a pain in the a__ due to shoddy workmanship and broken promises!
LINUX - LINUX - LINUX - here I come!

Thats why I buy from Costco. I am replacing my laptop with a Windows Vista version now, rather then deal with the hassle of waiting for an upgrade. My new laptop should be here any day now, brand spanking new and already Vista Premium on it.
-
Microsoft is allowing our school download windows vista business...I hope it's 64 bit compatible.
-
True ... if you want Vista better to wait - Costco has great refund policy.
- but I actually don't want Vista until I've checked out all the Digital Rights Management stuff in there - it's reportedly going to be far more restrictive and the consequences may not show up right away, so I wanted the option to stick with tried and true XP.
Read an article recently that stated there may be a run on XP OS once users get a handle on how "DRM lockdown" is gonna work on Vista. Additionally, Vista is bloatware and provides very few little desirable new functionality for me other than the much improved backup features.
Vista = A Pretty Pig with Lipstick! -
I am really concerned about the DRM as well. But I've read that it won't be activated until a few years from now and that all existing media will not be effected, just stuff that is DRM encoded that comes out after that.
I'm betting by that time I'll have a Mac or the DRM will be cracked. -
Is Premium 64 or 42 bits?
-
Vista has DRM issues now - one big issue is Vista does not do OPENGL, and there are evidently other immediate issues with Vista such as recognition of SP/DIF out from high end sound cards and Vista's insistence of routing sound processing through the processor (a huge slow down in performace) rather than sound card - the aim of this seems to be to restrict any digital sound capture from desktop.
The sandbox is getting smaller and tighter now and as you mention JackShadow, it will likely continue to become more so once they get everyone on board and the HD streaming DRM code becomes activated - Vista is ready and waiting for instructions for Copy Once, Write Once, Delete after so Many uses, Never Save, you can't do this and can't do that BS - etc etc etc.
LINUX LINUX LINUX - will likely provide the only means of future personal desktop control. I think this DRM BS has the capacity to force users into Linux at an accelerated rate, especially as the Linux GUI and ease of operation matures during this "Vista Lock Down increasingly Rent as You go phase".
IMO, Vista and it's eye candy will capture all the "gee whiz" herd first, then once critical mass is achieved, quietly release the restrictions upon everyone! By then, all the suckers will be in the same boat and XP will be history. -
I'm enjoying the use of PCBSD and DesktopBSD which are based on FreeBSD 6.2, never backed to windows since then because they offer me rich options for free, and work in 32 and 64 bits hardware as well
-
Thanks for the nice links to FreeBSD etc - I'm gonna try them out.
as far as "Is Premium 32 or 64 bits?" - if you get full install disks, I THINK it offers either (I think), but not sure about this yet.
i do know that the upgrade Toshiba offered me on my notebook is only 32 bit Premium.
so do you like PCBSD better than Ubuntu or one of the other user friendly flavors?
Which flavor of BSD do you like better - DesktopBSD or PCBSD? -
I downloaded the RTM version a while back to try it out and it didnt give u a choice between 32 and 64 only the choices between the different 32 bit versions. the 64bit version is different and you have to buy it seperately from the 32bit. as for downloading, even during the beta testing the 64bit version was larger than the 32bit and they were seperate downloads.

PCBSD PC-BSD 1.3.01 is based on FreeBSD 6.1-STABLE, and for now they offer only 32 bits version, if your notebook has ram less than 4 GB, You should stick to 32 bits for the time being, since 64 bits adds more load on the ram, cpu ..etc regardless it's FreeBSD, Vista, or any Linux distro.
DesktopBSD 1.6 is still in RC1 phase and based on a newer FreeBSD version which is FreeBSD 6.2-STABLE, for the time being it's only 32 bits, when they fixed the reported bugs, they will release 32 and 64 bits as well.
The main difference between DesktopBSD and PCBSD is the .pbi , pbi are ready compiled packages with one click, and they will install right away like in Windows system, beside using ports and packages too, which is based on DesktopBSD-tools which is made by the DesktopBSD.
DesktopBSD uses packages installs online from FreeBSD Packages systems which is based on DesktopBSD-tools, and use ports too.
PCBSD has one advantage for multi cpus for the time being, PCBSD can install the right kernel for you if you have dual cpus or 2 cores cpu without recompiling the kernel, but this is being worked out by DesktopBSD team to fix this matter.
As for why I'm using DesktopBSD 1.6-RC1, because it's based on FreeBSD 6.2 and I can boot the install CD in my Acer Aspire 5100 where FreeBSD 6.1 and PCBSD install CDs wont boot at all for many acpi fixes done in FreeBSD 6.2 for laptops, and I recompiled my kernel in DesktopBSD 1.6 and added "options SMP" so I can use both CPUs.
FreeBSD has emulators for both Linux and windows, so I can run apps made for Fedora and Windows in FreeBSD, which has over 16000 packages you can check them here http://www.freshports.org/
The best thing about FreeBSD, it will install all the needed packages to run any port or package without suffering from .rpm dependices.
