    Hi

I am planning to buy HP Pavilion dv5-1000us 15.4" Widescreen Entertainment Laptop from circuit city.

However it comes with 64 bit windows vista and most my programs don't run on it. So I am planning to install Windows XP Pro on it .

    Questions:

    1. Can anyone give me a Detailed procedure of how I can go about installing windows XP on this machine? I have XP pro with SP2 disc

I have searched and found guides for installing on DVx500 series but none on DV5-1000us.

    2. The laptop comes with 4 gig memory. now if I install XP will I see the 4 gig or just the 3 gig.

    Thank you

Quite often manufacturers use the similar type of hardware on multiple models. Therefore, the "Installing Windows XP on the Intel based dvx500t Series" might work in some parts. E.g. the sound card might be the same, and therefore those drivers might work on your computer as well. Do a little comparison between the dvx500t series computers and your own, and fill in the different drivers by yourself, such as the video driver, which should be floating around the internet somewhere. Just download them before downgrading, to ease the pain of getting it done.

Another option is to go to HP and ask for a downgrade. I believe they have some sort of offer to do this for less than 100US, or might even do it for free, as quite a lot of consumers are downgrading to XP nowadays. Besides, this way you'll guarantee yourself a legit XP, not that you would ever try to install a hacked one... =)

    Pretty straight forward...

    1) Pull up Vista Device Manager and write down exactly what parts and who makes them in your system.
    2) Double check to make sure that XP drivers are available from each manufacturer to download.
    3) Run the Win XP Pro disc and install the O.S.
    4) Download the correct XP drivers and install

There ya go. The hardest part is finding the correct drivers. Also be aware that the newer platforms and their respective components may and probably will loose some of their special options or features when downgrading to XP.
