I'd like to put Windows XP on my new HP HDX. Yes I realized I was buying a Vista computer... it's not mission critical to get XP on there, I'd just prefer it if its possible.
So please post a response with a link to any drivers you've found that work on XP. Also, just a quick question on the video driver... i've heard people recommend the modtool driver... why can't I just simply go to ATI and download drivers for the HD 2600 for WinXP? Also, did you have any problems getting the bootable XP disc to recognize any hardware or do you need special drivers for the hard drive / dvd-drive / etc...?
Thanks a lot, like I said, if you have a problem with me buying the HDX while wanting XP... it's really not a big deal so don't start flaming me for wanting a different OS, I'd just like what I'm familliar with that's all![]()

I have a great suggestion. You'll most likely find all your answers within 5mins. of your own research. Actually this question was already asked earlier today. Same answer was given also. -
I knew I'd get at least sarcasm!
I've so far read viking's post about a sound driver but someone else said it didn't work. The video driver that was posted earlier (modtool something) i have a link for, I just wanted to know why I had to install that and not just the XP drivers for the 2600 from ATI's website. If there's a post you know of that has a link to drivers for the tv tuner, video card, sound card, sata drive, etc., please just post the hyperlinkThanks!
-
ill help u out.
download and install a program called Everest. send me a screenshot of all the hardware you have.
im pretty sure it has the same SATA and chipset driver -
it's actually on its way here, I'm just getting prepared. BTW, I wiped my last notebook clean and re-found all the drivers myself, so I'm definitely not new to this, I just need the links to some of these. I'll post here when I get my computer, until then, if anyone wants to post their experience with an HDX and if they got XP to run correctly, *including* links to video, audio, tv tuner, webcam, 5-in-1 card reader, etc. I'm assuming some of these components are the same as other models of HP that still have XP, so maybe that will help.
It'd be nice to consolidate this into just one simple post with all the links of drivers for the (many) other people who hate Vista but still want an HDX so people down the road have an easier time doing it.
Thanks to anyone who can help out, and thanks mujjuman, I'll post here when I get my computer (which will be very soon). -
can you tell us your config?
-
i did some research and it seems as if the sound driver is unobtainable at this point
-
It's true that XP is more stable than Vista (and less of a resource hog), but Vista still has some advantages over XP. The bigger ones for example are DirectX 10, actual individual core management on multiple core processors instead of balancing the load over all the cores like XP does, and a lot better software and driver compatibility for 64-bit over XP.'s 64-bit Microsoft is coming out with Service Pack 1 soon, and it will probably crash half of the systems like SP2 did for XP, but hopefully after they get it running it will fix a lot of the issues with Vista and make it more convenient for us users.
So it's not completely horrible, and I know this doesn't change the fact that you might like XP a lot better. It just sucks that they don't still make drivers for the newer laptops and desktops to install XP. -

Also, how do you like Office 2007? I've heard mixed reviews of it and was wondering if it's worth getting or not. Also, is it compatible with older versions of office files? I know that you can't open an Office 2007 document inside of previous versions, but I was wondering if I will be able to open my current documents inside of it. -
TV Tuner = AverMedia
HD = 2 x 120gig 7200 RPM SATA
Video = ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT
Sound = Not sure
Webcam = Not sure
If i got those 5 things working I'll be happy. -

"We are disappointed that CPU-intensive applications such as video transcoding with XviD (DVD to XviD MPEG4) or the MainConcept H.264 Encoder performed 18% to nearly 24% slower in our standard benchmark scenarios. Both benchmarks finished much quicker under Windows XP. There aren't newer versions available, and we don't see immediate solutions to this issue." -

As far as the Office goes. I haven't really messed with it much. It's only meant for school. I haven't started school yet. I know you can open old versions of office files, but you are correct when you say you can't open 07 files in older versions of the software. I know that you can save the files to an older version of Office while on 2007. -
I ordered a hard drive to create a new XP build and will try very hard to get it done this weekend. I got your PM and have gotten a few from others as well but don't let that stop others from tracking down the sound drivers, they are out there to make it work. -
if XP had all those features that you mentioned, i would love it even more. -
my guess is that the next OS that comes out wont be that much slower than Vista. probably the same though, maybe faster if we complain enough. -

I have XP pro up and running on my HDX and it flys, its awesome. I am very glad that i put it on, it was worth the $140 for the software.
I still need to get the sound working though, can anybody help with a link to some drivers?!?!? -
i dont want to say its because your desktop is 400MHz slower than your laptop, because that would irrelevant. this is mostly about 4 cores vs 2 cores, and a much better graphics engine.
my guess is that there is something wrong with the XP installation... but other than that, i have no idea.
i have the same graphics as you, but a 2.0GHz T7300 and 2GB of RAM. when i was in Vista, it was just awfully slow. it was much, MUCH slower than my desktop with XP. my desktop has: AMD A64 3500+ @ 2.2GHz (single core), 1GB RAM, a very old GeForce MX440 AGP8x, and a slower SATA hard drive. it has XP on it.
my much slower desktop with a single core CPU with much less L2 cache, half the RAM, and an obsolete graphics engine was MUCH faster in XP..... when compared to my 2 cores, with 8 times as much L2 cache, twice the RAM, and a not so bad graphics card in Vista.
and i know that processor frequency has nothing to do with it, because now that my 2.0GHz laptop has XP, it blows my 2.4GHz desktop away. its the processor technology and the RAM advantage it has.
so the point of this is, my experience tells me that a computer with much lower spec'd hardware and XP is faster than a computer with much higher spec'd hardware and Vista. this isnt the first time i have come across this though.
anyway, i gave Vista a serious try. i even messed around with settings here and there, and i tried to delete as much as i can. it just wasnt good enough for me. i never tried a clean install though, just using what hp gave me. -

Sometimes I wonder how insanely fast it would be if I had Vista on it, cause obviously my laptop is doing something better than that rig. -
well im glad your laptop runs really fast with a clean install of Vista. ill try that someday. i want to get the Ultimate though, gotta save up for that
anyway, in XP the workload is mostly split, but sometimes 1 core works more than the other. then i always have the option to lock 1 program or more to 1 core, and the others to another core. ive noticed that increases performance greatly when working with CPU intensive programs. also works really well with virtual machines.
i guess intels generally have better CPUs, atleast for now.
1. inexpensive
2. reliable
3. fast
4. power saving -

Unless you have hardware that needs XP. I would not even bother.
I judt hope you got your dragon with 4GB. This seems to be the trick in getting Vista to run very fast. I think the Vista Ultimate 64 bit is great.
Must be the only one in the world.
Anyway. From reading the many posts here and other places. I've noticed just about everyone that has had problems with Vista's speed are uisning 1 or 2 GB of mem instead of 4GB.
I reaaly hate seeing stores like BB and CC selling PC's with vista and only 1 GB. Memory is cheap enough these days. Why not just sell the machines with Gb?
I had more problems with HP putting bloatware and crapware on the computer
Once I went though and got rid of all the crap and put my bought programs on. It works great. Very fast. Much faster than my 3GHZ desktop from Dell.
You can go into adavanced settings and change the performance settings and even turn off AERO. To make your pc even look like XP.
You can go into User Accounts and turn off that User Account Control to stop that anoying window from popping up.
I just bought POWERDVD ultimate tonight. Watched my 1st HDDVD tonight without a problem. I hate Quick play. So I'm so happy I found Powerdvd that works.
This PC loads HD DVD 5 times faster than my Hardware player does. -

personally, i dont liek the new Office nor the new Windows. they both have a good looking interface though.

mujjuman:
I bought the DVD retail version of Vista Ultimate (which came with both the 32 and 64 bit version) for $220 brand new off of ebay. I did a lot of searching because I wasn't going to pay $400 for it. I found it on a couple websites while I was searching around for under $300, but they didn't seem like reliable sites. Anyways, you could always go with the OEM version which is under $200, but apparently the OEM version can only be installed on one machine because it creates a key based off of the motherboard. I've heard from people that this isn't true though, but I just didn't want to deal with it.
I have Ultimate 64-bit on my desktop with the following config and it works great:
2.4Ghz Intel Quad Core (Q6600)
4GB of RAM
EVGA 8800GTX
EVGA 680i Motherboard
The bootup time of my computer is less than 10 seconds and everything flies. The only big problem I've noticed so far is Windows Media Player in Vista is flaky, but I haven't bothered to reinstall or try and fix it yet. Games play great in it, and I haven't had any problems with 32 bit applications installing on the 64-bit. So far I'm just trying to get used to where everything is and I'm going to start tweaking the settings and overclocking my hardware to see how fast I can get it to run. -
thats one of my problems though... i really dont want to learn to find where everything else, and find out that Vista isnt as tweakable as XP....
not only that, you have such a nice system, so i would hope that it runs well on it. my notebook is not the best out there (T7300 2.0GHz 4MB Cache and 2GB RAM, 8400M GS) but i expected Vista to run really well on it. instead, it ran slower than XP did on my old Duron 950MHz with 112MB of RAM. -
I have a hdx 9430ef and I need xp drivers. Can someone help me pls?
-
thanks!! but after I install all the drivers from hpdrivers.mercs.us I still have 4 unknown devices to install....
-
Right-Click them and click "Update Driver"
That worked for me on the dv9500..... it may apply. -
Hey guys,
I am new to this forum. I checked out a few forums and am already aware of some big shots here (mujjuman, Hackez, viking396 n others...) who have done wonderful job..
But however, I am still not able to install XP on my HDX. I followed steps from here
I get a BSOD when i try to boot up XP SP2 cd. I guess the SATA drivers provided above won't work on HDX..
Can you guys please help me out? Just point me to the right drivers. AS I said, I have followed the steps and learnt how to use nlite.. So... Please let me know how to install it..
In this thread, I jst found a few posts that said they were able to install Xp, but they didn't mention how they got it working..
Hope help comes at the earliest.. Thanks.. -
Hey Karthikmurs, thanks for the mention!
I dont remember whats in this thread, but I can try my best to help you.
Firstly, the SATA drivers from my thread wont work for the HDX. If you want, I can try and find the SATA drivers for your HDX... you were right on slipstreaming SATA drivers though, just the wrong ones.
Does your HDX (laptop?) have Vista on it now? Can you please find out what chipset it has?
Also, use XP SP3 if you werent already. talk to you soon -
Finally got it working. First I installed a pre ripped black edition I downloaded yesterday.. It sucked.. It worked, but, many things that an advanced user would use were removed..
I then downloaded f6flpy3287 version of drivers from intel's site. It worked!
So, now I have succeeded installing XP on HDX.. This thread (and the sticky thread on a dv series laptop) did help me a lot..
However, inspite of installing all drivers (no unknown device in device manager), my in built mic doesn't seem to work.. Any help on this?? -
Seems like your the only one to get this to work successfully. I think I'm gonna give it a go and try it. Karthikmurs if you have anytime, can you let me know which drivers that do work for XP? The built-in m ic issue, I'll worry about later.
Thanks -
actually my mic doesnt work either... in my dv9500t

Hello guys and thanks for a nice thread.
Ive just reinstalled my HP HDX 16 into Windows xp with the slipstream guide on this forum.
Ive got the most important things to work, but i still have 6 unidentified devices in device manager. Like others say i dont get my mic working, which i could use.
Ive attached an image with the device manager, and would be grateful if anyone could help me get those installed.
Here is also a list of other drivers which i used:
- Realtek 8168C LAN DRIVER
- Nvidia Geeforce Notebook Graphics driver (Also installes NVidia HD Audio)
- Intel Wifi Link 5100 WIRELESS
-Windowsupdate installed another device. I recommend once u get online to install all updates from windowsupdate
-Also http://www.hpdrivers.mercs.us was useful since some of the drivers there could be used.Attached Files:

Hello,
I just bought an HP HDX-16 notebook, with vista64 pre-installed.
I would like to install windows XP, but I am having the blue screen error while booting from the CD. I tried different tips i saw on this thread, but it doesn't seem to work for me.
The problem is that I don't have the sata drivers that apparently windows needs.
On this link: http://www.hpdrivers.mercs.us/ there is a small prog, but i don't have a floppy drive.
Does anyone have some advice I could use?
Thanks -

Hello, Thank you to all contributed in this thread. This is wonderful.
I have some problems with my HDX16 after installed XP Pro.
I found the driver for the quick launch button on HP official website but after install, it doesn't work.
I still have 5 un-recognized device in my device manager.
My speaker is also making funny "tick" noise once a while.
Does anyone successfully setup XP on HDX16 with all device working? Or anyone has experience on what I'm facing before?
Please help and thanks in advance. -
Sorry for bumping an old thread.
Any one successful with playing blu ray on HDX 16t with XP? I bought a bluray movie just now and only now did I realize it doesn't work.. I am, as we speak, trying to get the things work.
If anyone has already done it, please help me save some time.
Best regards,
Karthik
