I'm using a HP Pavilion dv1000 with WinXP Home edition. I also have a legal WinXP Pro cd (not from HP though). Is it possible to upgrade Home edition to Pro, and does the keyboard functions such as media control, sleep, vol and brightness control automatically gets asigned with upgrade from non OEM CD.

its possible to upgrade depending on which one you have if you have the full verion, you should be able to do a full install, not quite sure if its possible to just upgrade from home. if you have the upgrade cd well.......you know. as for using all the media control and other things there should be downloads on there website, or if you have the driver cd you can install them from there after your full install. but if you did an upgrade from home to pro. most likely the software should still be there for you to use and you would not have to install them again.

for upgrading Windows on a laptop does the CD has to be OEM cd. and how to find out whether the cd is OEM or not? I've a legal WinXp cd which I used to install on a desktop (I'm guessing its not OEM) can I use this cd to upgrade OS on the laptop.
whats the difference between OEM cd and any other Win cd?

The OEM is the one that usually comes with a computer or a laptop, if you have a XP upgrade cd that says a computer company name on, such as dell, HP, IBM and etc. You can only use it for that computer, but rarely do I see any company have a upgrade cd, just a reformat CD which will only work with that computer you bought. You can tell if your CD is not oem by the hologram that usually is on a windows XP CD, this is called the retail version. Then can you use it on any computer. if you want to upgrade it then you can try what i told you before.

Unless you have a specific need I see no benefit from upgrading to Pro.

    Hi All,
Do n't know if this will work from Home to Pro, but I know this works from XP to XP SP2. I purchased XP sp2 from Soft 4 Download and when asked for a full install or repair I chose repair. It installed SP2 without loosing my settings or programs. This was on my desktop and I did have to reinstall my audio drivers. Going from Home to Pro could however be a whole 'nuther can-O-worms.
