Hey all. I'm having a problem that I can't seem to fix.

When I try to shutdown Windows Vista, the apps start closing but after about 10 seconds, everything freezes up and nothing happens. I have to force a shutdown.

I'm gonna try and do it a couple more times and try to figure out what the problem is. Does anyone know what might be the issue here?

Have you downloaded any new updates from Windows Update lately?

How long did you let it sit their before doing a forced shutdown?
I kow some of the updates I did took like 15 minutes. But a message was displayed not to shut off the computer while updates were running.

Most likely an update. Forcing the shutdown before it was finished may have broke it.
Try checking the windows restore and see if you have any restore points before this problem stated.
If not. You may have to do a factory restore.

Try giving it 5 mins. It might just be REALLY slow at shutting down. Before I optimized mine it took a good 3-4 mins. Optimized about 45 secs - 1 min. Note I only changed one setting to get this. So find out if it's actually freezing.

First off @tinman2007, the solution isn't to do a factory restore, thanks, but that's not a great idea.

To everyone else, I didn't run any windows updates as I have it disabled at the moment. What happened was the computer basically froze, I gave it 10 mins untill I realized that it in fact froze. not a huge deal but not that small either, considering the fact that I have no bloatware. this is after a clean install.

It has been running great for weeks. I think I pinpointed the problem. I have linux installed and I messed with the partition from windows, thereby messing up GRUB. because GRUB was messed up I couldn't even get into windows. So I ended up installing and reinstalling linux till the problem was finished.

It's possible that it messed windows up a bit. I just tried shutting down and it worked fine. I'm gonna reboot a few times to make sure.

Thanks everyone for the help. I appreciate it. @Jin07, I optimized my laptop too, it takes about 30-40 secs to completely shut down. Thats why when it took 10 mins I knew something was wrong.

The only apps which are open usually before I shut down, are my firewall antivirus and fingerprint software. those are the only things that start up with my laptop. I like a clean startup list.

I disabled MS updates. My opinion is that they cause more damage then help.

I agree, But if you called HPIT. That would have been the 1st thing they would have had you do. I'm not kidding. Every time I called HPIT or sent them an email. Even about a warm spot on my computer's left side. They told me to do a factory restore.

    I found this link.

At least now you know that you're not the only one with the problem

    Good Luck.

HP will always ask you to do a recovery restore to rule out a software issue.

You see, if its a hardware issue then its their problem and you have to send it in. If its software then its something you did and your problem.

HP will just point you out to Microsoft to try get this resolved.

lol, the way the world works huh, instead of really trying to help, they tell you to factory restore. I'm sorry but there are a lot of people that know what they are doing with computers. The solution is very rarely to factory restore.

Btw flipfire. I've never had good results with vista updates, it's always telling me that there was an error downloading some of the updates, and it's happened one time too many that after using MS updates something went wrong with my PC. I'm not saying it's entirely bad, just saying that for ME it's not working out. Besides my computer is damn secure as it is.

For some people, updates are very important. The only real reason I would download updates from them are to fix certain bugs and security holes. but instead of fixing me comp, they break it.

When SP1 comes out, I will be sure to download it.

My windows update has been broken for the last 2 weeks, it keeps failing. Wont update at all. I hate updating aswell specially when your computer is perfect but there are security related fixes that is really necessary

Im just waiting for SP1 to release properly and found 100% stable so i can switch to 64bit

Same here. Windows update won't work. The truth is, if you don't really do stupid things on the web and you have a good firewall protecting your ports. I think your fine.

There was this website that tests your comp for security holes. My comp passed all the tests. there was a test that tries putting a trojan on your pc and it didn't work, because my firewall stopped it.

Pretty cool huh. Makes you feel just a wee bit safer knowing that much.

Unfortunately there will always be new security holes created thats why updating is a must. I try to remove some of the unecessary updates

Security fixes arent the only thing included in windows update. Some are for compatibility, bug fixes and yes improvements.

As much as i hate it, microsoft doesnt really tell you in detail what the patch exactly does
