hi,
seems like my interal wifi is dying... signal fades significantly whenever I go two stories up my house. My newer laptop is fine. Is there a compatible 802.11N PCI card for this laptop? Is the internal card a PCI or mini PCI? Also, I tried using my old USB wireless adapter, but it cant detect my router. It detects my neighbours, but not mine...weird. and advise is appreciated. thanks

Unfortunately HP has a whitelist in the BIOS that locks out all but a handful of internal WiFi cards. You might be able to find the correct part # from the HP service guide and/or partsurfer.hp.com and search for that part on eBay.
I'm going to guess that your newer laptop simply has a better card and/or better antennas. Your USB adapter has far worse range. If you can run Ethernet from your router to the upper floor of your house, plug in a second router up there, configure it as an AP (no DHCP server), give it the same SSID (network name) and encryption, and your laptop will connect to whichever radio gives it the strongest signal. Works great at my house. -

You might also try turning up both the "Roaming Aggressiveness" and the "Transmit Power" on your notebook to either medium-high or highest. To do this, go to Device Manager and find your wireless card. Right click "Properties" select the "Advanced" tab and make the changes via the selections windows.
Worth a try at least anyway..... -
