I was online with my notebook this morning with the wireless (light/blue) on and suddenly it just quit working, amber light?
I restarted the notebook several times, still amber wireless light.
I checked my wireless upstairs, reset everything, that part works fine, but notebook wireless still didn't work. I turned on/off the wireless on the notebook several times, still amber light. Then checked my network drivers in system properties:

Everything seems fine, then ran O&O defrag, AVG anit-virus, Search & Destroy and everything checked out. I had also updated my BIOS to F.3D 3 weeks ago too.
So, what do I do now

Try to disable it and re-enable it. Roll back the drivers if that doesn't work.
-
Well, I would try updating the drivers; I say that because I have had problems before when supposedly "This device is working properly", but it actually has problems.
Btw, can other computers connect to your network fine? -
My guess is that you have a bad motherboard, and that your notebook is in that group that had some issues. Even if you are out of warranty it should still be covered. Here is a page that has some more details: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...7277&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&jumpid=reg_R1002_USEN
-
What would the motherboard have to do with the wireless?
-
Okay... I've never had a problem the 8 months I've had it so this is new to me... how do I disable it? Also on rolling back the driver... is that just re installing the driver from the CD? (I put my restore on a CD and wiped it off the HD to save space).

After checking that link you gave me, this was the first problem listed, so it sounds like it finally caught up with my notebook...
Step 3: Identify the symptoms
If your computer’s model number and serial number are listed above, the series is within the specified range, and the notebook PC experiences one or more of the symptoms listed below, contact HP during the Duration of the HP Limited Warranty Service Enhancement to determine whether you are eligible for a free repair.
The notebook does not detect wireless networks and the wireless adapter is not detected in the Device Manager. -
so what ya gotta do, is give em a call and then you will have to send it in to get the motherboard replaced
-
The motherboard has to do with wireless because the wireless card is wired to the motherboard.

I called the number provided in the link above twice now, was put on hold several times and over an hour of my time, then they said we have a problem processing this, please call back tomorrow. They did admit there was a problem with my notebook and to send it in. It was a person with a very heavy India-Asian accent the first time, so I wonder if that call went overseas? -

According to the service guide WiFi is provided by a replaceable card, same as every other notebook. So, is the problem with the WiFi card or the motherboard? I would think it'd be the WiFi card but I don't know.
I'm refurbishing a dv9000z that falls within the problematic serial #'s and I'd rather not have to send it into HP. If it's a motherboard problem... well, I'll let HP monkey with it. I won't know whether WiFi works until my new HD arrives on Tuesday and I reinstall the system.
Edit: my current WiFi card is part # 407159-001, Broadcom 802.11b/g. Oddly enough this part # is not listed in the service guide dated December 2007, which probably means that it's a bad part. -
getting a new wireless card will not help. The issue is with the motherboards, where there is probably to much heat which must have made some some of solders a bit loose. Because some of the other issues are like that the notebook will not turn on and such.
-

Ah, thanks. Hmm, you sure? I can't see any reason for that particular spot to heat up enough to melt solder. Unless the problem is elsewhere...
-
could just be like the xbox 360 red ring of death. Where the board warps a tiny bit because of heat and then some of the connections come loose.
-
Well, until I did the BIOS update to F.3D a couple weeks ago, the notebook was running pretty hot the past 8 months at 48-55 C, and now runs at 32-45 C. That heat could have very well damaged something over time.
-
Well... the good news it HP called us this morning before we were going to call back. They were very nice and just was comfirming things... then shortly after sent me this email: (part of email)

It is a big problem with the dv6000 series, because I had to send my laptop in as well for a wireless problem. They ended up replacing the motherboard and processor. I don't know why they needed to replace the processor, but it benefited me so I don't really care. But apparently it was a problem with the connection port between the wireless card and the motherboard.
-
That cpu and motherboard had a bad heating issue too and probably why the WIFI went bad... from the heat?
Anyway, the new BIOS update F.3D did cool mine down from 45-55C to 35-45C, but I think it was a bit late as the damage from the heat was already done...
I think when I get mine back, I will sell it pronto. -
I forgot to ask... how did you know they replaced the motherboard AND cpu? Did they tell you that when they shipped it back or by phone?
-
There was a piece of paper inside the box they sent the laptop back in that had a description of what they did, and a list of the parts they replaced. I've never seen this from HP before (from experience with sending laptops for repair to HP), but surprisingly they included it in there.
-
I had it and read my story...I made out VERY well. Their CS was incredible...
http://http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=206492 -
Yup... I read it and posted it there. I wish they had a email contact though, because I am legally deaf, so I can't hear phones. I always have to get someone to call for me. Once I have an email address, then I can get things done. Like lobbying for a new notebook.
My lip-reading skills are so good, (near 100%) I fool people when they're around me, until they start talking to me from behind that is.
-
Sorry...they would not send me an email nor give me an email address.
BTW, I don't mean to offend you, but did you happen to see the Seinfeld episode where George and Jerry were using a girl to read lips and find out what people were saying about them? Very funny.... -
Doesn't offend me at all as I've been deaf all my life, so I'm use to anything anyone can throw at me. It was worst in junior high.
Anyway that was funny... I saw that episode. Reminds me of when I was in High School they ALWAYS wanted me for sports, like football as I could lip read what plays the other side was going to use! Nowdays, the coaches cover their mouth with their clipboard. LOL -
Posted this in another thread:
I was wondering something. After I put Acronis 11 on my old computer I noticed the drop in WIFI. Last night I put Acronis 11 on the new computer, restarted it and then did a "speed test"....was VERY slow and reacted the same. I then removed Acronis 11 and the problem was gone....coincidence?
To the people who lost WIFI, did you install Acronis or Ghost? -
Sounds like a problem. I'll let the ones with Acronis or Ghost comment...
