dv5 will not shut down when start>shut down>shut down is selected if screen is closed before entire shutdown sequence is completed

if screen is left open, shut down does complete

dv5 is running Vista Home Premium x64

On my other notebooks running XP, as soon as shut down is initiated I can close the screens and the notebooks complete the shut down and turn off while the screen is closed.

Is shut down hanging? Is it this way on all Vista notebooks?

click on the battery on your system tray (I think it should be there)

and change closing the lid to something from sleep. I think your laptop just might be going to sleep instead of shutting down. You can probably jus tmake it do nothing and it will work fine.

You need to check your "power settings." Specifically, what the computer does when you close it. The default power setting is to "sleep" on close. The action (sleep or hibernate on close) pre-empts the shutdown.

Change it to "do nothing" when you close the computer.

    Hope this works for you!

Thanks. I forgot about the settings.
That is exactly what it was.

I have a similar problem on my dv2700. When I click the power button to initiate sleep and the ac adapter is plugged in or I close the lid the fan does not stop running. I have to leave the screen open, unplug the ac wait for the fan to stop running; then plug it in again and close the lid.

    Hassles, hassles, hassles.
