The price was right and since my 3.5 year old fujitsu (just past the extended warranty :( ) appears to be dying, I dove in and ordered a preconfigured model nx9420. (there's also a rebate going on)

I got the one with the ATI x1600, the WSXGA+ brightview screen , XP pro and the 2ghz core 2 duo. I know that HP will probably be updating their lineup soon, but for me the machine they have right now fit everything that I needed....plus, I didn't want vista. I want to stay with XP until at least service pak 1.

So...other than money...there's nothing to lose. I can't wait til it gets here. I had it shipped overnight since the cost wasn't that bad.

Any tips for set up or maximizing the video performance that anyone can offer a newbie? :D

Yippee! It arrived just before lunch. I haven't even turned it on yet, but the build quality looks superb. And it's much lighter than I would have expected for such a big machine. So, here I am back at work- unable to play with my new toy, but at least I started the battery charging. I'll start building it tonight and get the restore discs burned.

Use the latest omega radeon drivers in high optimization mode. And remember to keep your hard drive defragged and wasteful windows services disabled. Also remove any programs from startup that you don't need (using msconfig, start menu, hijackthis, etc).

Wow...this is a great computer. Thanks for the advice. I haven't gotten around to updating any drivers yet, but I'm still amazed at how good this laptop is. The screen is great, speed excellent, and build quality top notch....and the price was so affordable.

The machine was also not cluttered with all the junk software I expected on a new comptuer. ...fantastic! ...plus there's a built in back-up and recovery program that will create an entire disk image if you desire. So I can build this laptop exactly like I want and create an image to restore from that includes *everything*. Yippee!

All in all, I'm extrememly satisfied. A business computer build seems to suit me just fine. :)
