I had just about given up hope, but I found an inexpensive mDP to VGA adapter that works.
I tried a friends Apple mDP to VGA cable, which didn't work, and I also tried a generic cable I bought on dealextreme, which didn't work.
What did work was a "Dynex" brand passive cable, so it turns out that the Envy 14 does not require an active adapter. As soon as I plugged the monitor and adapter in to the laptop, it recognized the new monitor. The mDP port only works while using the Radeon graphics, the Intel stuff can't see the Displayport.
You can find Dynex adapters for around $15 on eBay. Be careful, the working adapters look very similar to the non-working adapter. See the attached picture. Its hard to tell in the picture, but the working adapter has a blue VGA plug, the non-working generic adapter has a black VGA plug.

Note: I am using the 10.7 drivers from HP, I haven't tried the adapter with the default 10.3 drivers.

This morning I found the adapter you labeled "WORKING" at BestBuy and it didn't work for me. It was definitely 100% DYNEX, and it looks EXACTLY like the one you've taken a picture of.
I think you just must be lucky. Go with it...
Meanwhile, I've just bought my souped up ENVY 14 and I've threatened to return it unless HP mails me the HDMI to VGA at their expense. They've 'escalated me' but haven't called back, so I'm still waiting to make my case. -
Worked for me.

Hi all,
I can confirm this too. No other generic adapter or apple mdp-vga adapter has so far worked at all. DVI-D was never a problem, but this is the only adapter I've tried that provides analog VGA that just works.
Couldn't find this adapter in Europe, but ebayed it from a supplier in US. The shipping cost is of course silly compared to the price of the item itself, but for me, this was a hassle-free way of just getting the mdp/vga working. (Even with shipping, cheaper and arguably better than the HDMI/VGA-alternatives.) -
I can confirm that the Dynex mDP->vga adapter pictured above (*working*) works for my Envy 14 (F.23 bios, 10.12 drivers).
I tried both the Mac adapter as well as the Accell mDP->vga adapter suggested in another thread, and neither worked (though the Accell mDP->DVI I also got worked just fine). The Dynex works just fine though on my Lenovo 22" 1920x1200 thinkvision screen. -
Amazon.com: 6ft Mini Displayport Male to DVI Male Cable (Pure White, Set of 1): Electronics
I'm using this product to power 24" samsung and it's working great. -
I have been using the Dynex mDP to VGA adapter since Jan. I have no problems with the adapter.
If you have problems with the adapter make sure you have the right graphics running on your computer. -
Is this the right one that can be found on ebay?
"Dynex Mini DisplayPort-to-VGA Adapter DX-AP180"
thanks -
To be honest, it's ridiculous how difficult it was to track down a working adapter. I gave a talk at a small symposium a few weeks ago and it turned out that they did not have a 'presentation computer' set up for using/transferring files from USB. Thus, everyone was using their own laptops and it was pretty embarrassing having to explain that my laptop did not have the right adapter (I had to borrow someone's macbook....). -
Thanks so much for this! I was able to buy this and ship from the US cheaper than buying an active adapter or even some of the passive ones from Ireland. Appreciate it. Hopefully this will solve all my VGA woes.
