In my country it comes with a basic one year warranty.. but you can pay extra $175 and extend it.
This is my first laptop, so I wanted to hear from the experienced forum users here, how many of you actually had to use your warranty with the dv2x00 series. do you think extending the warranty is worth this much?

I can get a LG R405 with 3Y warranty for $200 less than this HP with a pretty similar spec - what would u do? :eek2:

Without a doubt I would extend the warranty. It actually amazes me that there's so much talk about buying laptops on this website, but so little mention of warranties. The warranty is everything to me, it determines which laptops I buy. Always extend the warranty to at least 3 years, and if you can definitely buy an accidental damage warranty as well.

Laptops aren't like desktops where you can easily swap out a broken part yourself. If something goes wrong 2 years down the road with your laptop and you don't have a warranty, there's a chance you may be stuck with scrap metal unless you want to pay $500 to get it fixed. So I say ALWAYS go with the extended warranty. I can't believe people buy laptops without the warranty, it surprises me.

Well yah of course the longer the warranty the better.
I opened this thread in hope to hear of people that actually had to use their warranty with this certain HP series after having it for over a year. to hear if it's worthy to add so much money for it. I know it's not like regular pc parts you can't just change parts yourself (unless it's an HD/Mem).. but from all the computers i did handle, it was quite rare for a mobo/graphic/monitor to just die out all of the sudden.

Besides don't forget the LG does come with the extended 3Y warranty and costs $200 less for a similar setup.

I've had multiple problems with my laptop and will even be sending it in next month. Laptops are poorly built compared with desktop and they are more fragile as well. Therefore I would advise you to buy the extended warranty, I will without a question do it the next time I buy a laptop. The failure and mortality rates of laptops are way higher than desktops. Imagine your CPU or GPU getting toasted after one and a half years? That would require a motherboard replacement which usually lands at $300-500 and is often close to half the value of your laptop.

Besides that, if your laptop experience a failure after 2 years or so there might not be any replacement parts which will force HP to give you a brand new laptop with better specs. That is if you have an extended warranty, if you don't then then your laptop suddenly becomes useful as a door stopper.

Personally, there is a price point where I would consider whether extended warranty is needed or not. It's all a gamble anyway.

In my case, my laptop died a week ago, several months after the 1 year warranty ran out. Motherboard or video problem, I think. Called HP, they offered to sell me a 2 year extended warranty with accident coverage at a cost far less than the cost to replace my motherboard. Bought it, it's now being shipped for repair.

I just order the dv7t with the 2yr accidental warranty... but I regret it. I'm going to call at 8am to cancel it and switch to safeware its like $80 for a $2500 coverage. $74 for like $2300 and $64 for $2000. Although your rates maybe different considering your location. The thing that sold me to this service was that they be accidental damage, and theft. As I read on their site. If your laptop is lost/stolen you just need a bit of proof and they will replace your laptop with a same spec laptop. I don't know how it all works, but I will call them in the morning. This service exceeds the HP offers. Although since this is an insurance agency, I bet there may be a bit of fine prints. Also if the system is damaged, they could possibly pay for hp's repair service. I found out about the site from this forum, and I was really really surprised. Hope that this info helps.

The safeware rates are yearly, and it could cost like $160 for 2yrs much cheaper than HPs 2yr warranty.

A warranty is insurance. Statistically, a warranty should not pay off for the owner of the laptop, otherwise the insurance/warranty company could not afford to offer the warranty. You have to ask yourself whether you think you have a more than higher chance of something going wrong. With the recent HPs it seems like they might, due to the issues with the bad motherboards, screen connections and the Nvidia GPU debacle.

If you decide to buy the extended warranty, you have to read ALL of the fine print, exclusions, their plan for fixing the laptop (themselves? HP? somebody local?) and the steps you have to take to obtain warranty service (e.g. some make you go get repair estimates at your own expense). A lot of the third-party warranties are not worth the paper they are written on due to all of the limitations buried in the fine print.

Personally, My family has had 3-4 DV2XXX series computers, the latest being the 2700t, and all of them have suffered some kind of problem, hard drive, mobo, battery failure, screen hinges, something or another on each and every one of them. Think about how much user replaceable components cost. A hard drive is about 150 bucks for a decent one, that is a cost that you could absorb if you didnt get the extended warrenty, but if your motherboard fails as many dv2000's do, then you would be in the hole for like 300-400 dollars atleast. The warranty will pay for itself, especially if you buy a dv2000. They are great computers, but have some flaws with heat related issues.

Now when it comes to buying the warranty or the safeware insurance, i would go with the hp warranty, because if you send your laptop in three times for the same problem or you continually have problems with your laptop, they will replace it for you. My first dv2000 died due to a mobo failure, and hp gave me a new laptop with better specs, and they gave me three more years of warranty with accidental damage. Its really up to you, but i would advise going with the hp warranty because its direct from the manufacture, and you cut out the middle man.

    >>nd hp gave me a new laptop with better specs, and they gave me three more years of warranty with accidental damage.<<

That was exceptionally good coverage. Many warranties have fine print that says if the computer is replaced with another unit at any time, the extended warranty stops at that point.

Borntooxlr8 tnx for your msg, i didn't know the dv2000 might be quite as problematic as you claim. in other words taking this with less warranty is too much of a risk.

as for fine print and manufacturer warranty, in my country we usually deal with the official importer, in HP's case they don't have such a good reputation here.

I'm pretty sure i'm swan over to choose the LG R405 over this HP, as I said i can get a pretty similar spec, but for $200 less and with the extended warranty already included, plus it's actually a bit lighter which is always good.

If any of you have Amex card or Platinum Visa/Mastercard, you get an automatic one year warranty extension through the card.
