It is no longer possible to use F6+floppy to install AHCI with XP on 8730w (it was on the 8710). HP will offer no assistance. Method: go ahead and configure as IDE and get XP installed. Download and run SP39316. This will require a reboot. Then with drivers from SP41383 on a floppy, use device manager to update drivers for IDE/ATA...SATA/AHCI device and specifically select ICH9M/M-E from floppy. System will balk, but go ahead... Do this for both AHCI 'devices' in device manager. Now reboot and set SATA to AHCI mode. System will discover new hardware and require one more reboot. There will now be only one 'device' under the IDE/ATA Controllers listing - ICH9M/M-E (2929). Now you can re-run SP41383 to finish getting all files in place. (Note: for those who have had trouble using USB floppy drive and F6 - there are only 2 manaufacturers supported by Microsoft for this task. And I believe only one can actually be acquired these days... IBM ASM Part # 27L4226, FRU Part# 05K9283 Part#19308801-19 which is actually a TEAC floppy. - so the above method may be your only shot if you don't have the right floppy to begin with.) What was frustrating was having the correct drivers on the floppy but system no longer 'recognized' all the options. i.e. they were in the txtsetup.oem file, but don't show up as selections with F6...additional storage device...) - and none of the ones that do show up work! Hope this save somone some time. Also - driver extraction instructions with SP41383 (or maybe Intels readme) are incorrect...to extract drivers only use -a -p c:\pathname (not the -a -a -pc:\pathname as documented.)
