I have decided to go back to XP. I have copy of XP Home that came with my Dell desktop that I bought in 2003. Would this copy of XP work on my dv6500t? Would it be outdated? I do not think that it installs any drivers because there is a separate disc which contains the drivers.

The XP disc is most likely an OEM copy... which means its license is "locked" to the old desktop you bought...

To install it on your laptop...well... you have to lie to Microsoft...phone them saying that your desktop motherboard got fried, so you replaced it, now just need to reactive your license.. bam...should work...

search the forum for more info...

    Good Luck

Yes it does say OEM on it. So will it give me 30 days to activate it like on Vista?

No, an OEM copy should not be installed on another machine. In fact, it is against the EULA (and therefore illegal) to install on another machine.

I'd also be willing to bet you either could not install it or could not activate it. Good luck on that one

Thread closed, sorry...but this one can only go down from here.

You need a HP or Compaq WinXP Home install CD, the newer the better. Which particular model it's from is not important. Then, if your BIOS is licensed for WinXP, it'll install pre-activated. If not, you'll have to buy another WinXP license. I've clean installed old HP and Compaq machines this way.

You can also construct a HP OEM CD using the OEMBIOS method at the end of this page:

Now, actually getting all the drivers you need is... interesting. See the other threads in this forum for info on that, they should answer any further questions.
