I have an old HP NX6310 a nice celeron with 1.5GB of RAM which came with XP preinstalled. I had not touced HP since its first install so decided to format and reinstall XP Pro.

Now when I try to install XP, after loading the files I am getting the error no hard disk detected  I tried couple of times but no luck. I have a full legal version of XP Pro.

I tried with VISTA just to check if its an issue with the hard disk. But I could install VISTA without any problems

Can any one tell me what could be an issue with XP installation

You need to Google "Slipstream SATA Drivers" and see what you need to do. It cannot ID the disk because XP install routines are not aware of (nor have drivers for) the SATA disks that have been out for the last few years. Using nLite you can slipstream the SATA drivers in and be on your way.

See if there is an option on your BIOS to set SATA to Compatability Mode.

I would not go the BIOS route. That does reduce HDD performance since you'll be operating in IDE mode. Its pretty easy to slipstream.

Plus, the option might not be there.

nLite, from what I heard, makes it pretty easy. If you have a floppy drive (via USB) you can check out the "F6 method" which involves just loading a floppy with the SATA drivers and using your old XP disk. Hit F6 during the loading, and then the computer will ask you about the drivers on the floppy.

Thanks for the help guys :) I think I messed up with BIOS settings. When I changed to non-native mode for ATA, XP installation went smoothly

Thanks once again for your help an quick replies
