I have a new Compaq Presario C304NR - came with XP Home. I am trying to install XP Pro with SP 2 - goes through the 'XP -What do you want to do screen', selecting Upgrade. It gathers files, dynamic update or whatever it is called then reboots - I get a BSOD: Setup cannot detect CD ROM - F3 to exit setup

On restart I have the option of selecting XP Home which works fine or the XP Pro which will go through this process again.

I will be trying my hand at nLite this weekend, does anyone know what drivers I need to select/install to detect the CD ROM (It's a CD/DVD burner BTW)...
    Thanks

Been a while since I've used nLite (slipstreamed a few SP2 cd's, thats about it) but I honestly can't recall needing to give it any special drivers... thats really strange behavior..

Just out of curiosity, can you boot to cd's?

Yes, I can boot to CD's. In XP Home mode everything works 100% - the XP Pro install just gives me the error described

I did a System Restore after this first happened and tried an older version of XP Pro SP1 - went through the same procedure, rebooted and it could not detect the hard drive - this I'm sure is probably the SATA driver problem I have read so much about here

I have wiped C clean, tried a BartPE disc (it lets me into the system, but I can't install XP from there), did a restore from the recovery discs - what a frickin nightmare

For anyone else having problems installing XP Pro over the existing XP Home installation, here is what I had to do:

(make the restore discs should you ever need them FIRST)

    1. copy the swsetup folder to an external harddrive
    2. restore the system back to like new condition, load in a BartPE disc - restart
    3. on startup (f8) set the SATA drive to Disable
    4. from the BartPE command prompt, format C:, format D:
    5. restart with a bootable XP Pro disc
    6. swsetup has the drivers expecially the audio driver you will need. You can also load Quick Play and myDVD (player) from swSetup and any any of the crap trial/crippled (Sonic) programs that came with the original installation should you so desire.
