I recently got the HP dv5-1004nr from BestBuy and I'd like to install XP on it. I have a few spare laptop drives (modern) and I low-level formatted them and build an NTFS partition on each one (using linux and Vista. with the same result). The problem is though whenever I get to the part of the XP setup near the beginning after it loads preliminary drivers I then get a BSoD. This occurs with both laptop drives.

As far as I know the southbridge controller is the SB700

Has anyone had success installing XP on this Beast?

I've checked and rechecked BIOS settings... Anything else to try?

Are you trying WinXP SP3? If not, slipstream SP3 in and try again. It probably won't help, but...

Interesting, and disturbing... I was going to attempt XP when I got my dv5t from HP...But this doesn't sound good, though mine will be Intel and it looks like the model you got is AMD.

You MAY need to get specific AMD/whatever chipset drivers slipstreamed into your XP install. That'd be my only thought.

XP on Vista original machines can be a very tricky thing. I wrote a guide for the Compaq c762NR that's online complete with drivers and everything. It took me almost a month to figure everything out completely, and some people still email me saying they have problems getting their Atheros wireless card to work.

I PRAY that HP doesn't send my dv5t with an Atheros WiFi card in it. I might sh*t a brick. Since I didn't have customization options since this is a replacement notebook they are giving me.

This is exactly what I haven't tried yet. I searched Google and the AMD/ATI KB and found no driver for the SB700 south-bridge controller.

Then again, there could be a very simple solution that someone already succeeded with. I pray they read this thread.

I haven't owned an AMD/ATI based system, so I'm not sure what their drivers usually entail, but I hope you find a solution.

What is the actual chipset in that laptop? I have pretty good luck finding stuff so if you tell me I'll try to help best I can.
CPU-Z can help you to ID everything, post screens of it.

I have gotten the intel chipset drivers from intels website for my coming dv5t, provided ti doesn't have some oddball chipset that the driver intel put out doesn't support under XP (which is entirely possible).

I fully plan to try the XP route when I get the machine...after I've burned my recovery cd's of course...

PCWizard claims that it is an AMD 780 northbridge with SB700 southbridge.

I really hope I can find a solution to this problem... Vista drives me nuts!

The drivers should be included in the catalyst package...
    http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_catalyst.aspx?p=xp/integrated-xp

Download and etract the executable and you should be able to slipstream the SATA drivers onto the XP disc. Make sure the disc is atleast SP2, otherwise you might run into other problems.

I think your problem has nothing to do with the system setup. I had the same prob with another lap and guess what it was.... bad memory!!! If you have 2 memories try taking out one of them and retry. if the same happens try the other memory.

It wouldn't hurt to grab MemTest86+ and check that.

At this point I recommend sticking with 64-bit Vista SP1 and 4GB RAM. Vista is now stable enough and if you throw enough RAM at it performance isn't bad.

I have the same exact Problem on my DV7T-1020. There is no option to disable Native Sata/AHCI support either.

There wont be because HP doesn't support XP on these systems. Your best option would be to download the intel sata driver for ICH9M, extract the drivers & then slipstream onto an XP disc.

Almost worked. I got past the blue screen but after the text mode loads all the drivers on the HD then reboots.

I get "A Disk Read Error occurred" "Press ctrl+Alt+Del to restart.

    So far I used:
Intels 32-bit Floppy Configuration Utility for Intel Matrix Storage Manager (iaAHCI.INF)8.2.0.1001
    Intel INF Update Utility 9.0.0.1008

The floppy Driver got past the blue screen error but its stuck on the installation after the first reboot. The Hard Drive controller driver for the DV7T I need to install is ICH9M - 2929 according to Vista.

    EDIT:
Almost there! Turns out I have to delete the partition & then quick format it in text mode Windows installation. Windows XP is installed but im now stuck on the TV Tuner & Sound Card Drivers

I agree with miner. Enable the SATA/AHCI support in the laptop's BIOS and use a slipstreamed XP (with the drivers from Intel) to try installing XP.

The problem is that Micro$oft was counting on Vista taking off and didn't want any loopholes allowing a migration back to XP so the hardware is so customized for Vista. But, the slipstreamed XP should (or could) be a workaround.

Just wondering.. how are you supposed to get the XP drivers?

Your dv5 will loose alot of functionality without proper set of drivers (no e-SATA )

    I suggest sticking to Vista.

Any luck on getting this figured out? I have a AMD Turion based DV5z on the way, and I am doing prelim research on downgrading to XP. Doesnt look too promising...

By the way, does anyone know how the fingerprint device works with XP? Are drivers easy to find for that functionality?

They key to getting it installed is to slipstream the AHCI driver from the 6735b, one of HP's business class notebooks with an AMD CPU. It has XP as an option for the OS. You can use many of the drivers from it on the dv5z, though not all. I did a little mini review of the dv5z which goes over some of the steps I took to install XP. I got most of the drivers except the IR receiver and the audio driver. The audio worked, but was flagged in Device Manager. Some are reporting the audio not working. Mine worked despite the Device Manager saying otherwise.

Thanks for the input ZaZ. I downloaded the ahci driver you suggested and then slipstreamed it in a Windows XP SP2 bootable CD using nlite.

Now the instalation worked like a charm (At least it is, running at 90% copying files atm, then we will see how it runs after it reboots xD).

I got some of the XP drivers from other posts in the net. The ATI driver can be grabbed from ATI directly, Radeon HD3200 (dv5-1004nr), the Atheros driver is the same from vista, the sound driver is suposedly the same in the SWSETUP folder (Remember to burn this files in a DVD before downgrading to XP).

I will keep checking here for uptdates, but so far so good. Also found out the quicklaunch buttons driver on the HP site :>.

    Thanks again!

You can get most of the needed XP drivers after you install XP and then do a Microsoft Update. I just finished my Vista 64 to XP Pro conversion last night.

    Here's how I did it:

    1. Research, research, research anything you can find on your laptop and converting to XP.

    2. Next create the Recovery DVD's off the partition on the hard drive, if you botch the install at least you can go back to Vista. This used 3 DVD's or you can put them on 16 or 17 CDs I can't remember exactly which it was.

    3. I downloaded Killdisk to my USB drive and booted from it, wiped the hard drive and restore partition.

    4. Tried to install XP with my normal SP3 install disk, didn't work. This is when I dug deeper to find the SATA issue, learn from my mistake.

    5. Downloaded nlite and slipstreamed the AMD SATA drivers into my XP Pro SP3 CD from my old laptop.

    6. Installed XP and it worked like a charm.

    7. Booted up, had about 7 driver problems in the device manager. One of which was the Atheros wireless driver (and network card and modem)).

    8. Downloaded the Vista driver for the wireless card from HP's website. That actually installed correctly. Many of the Vista drivers didn't.

    9. Went to Microsoft's website, ran Microsoft Update, it found all the updated drivers but the one for sound, and some bus driver and one other one. It might have been a driver for the e-SATA didn't look that close.

    10. Tried downloading the Vista sound driver from HP and it appeared to install, but there was an error saying it couldn't started I think.

That's where I'm at right now, I''ll try messing around this weekend and seeing if I can resolve it and I'll let you guys know. Hope this helps someone down the road!
