How much physical memory does your DV5T use at idle? Without a clean install, I am getting about 36% - 38%. Would a clean install reduce this?

Doubt it, Vista by design uses alot of memory for better performance and is why you should get as much RAM as you can.
With the flood of RAM chips coming out of China right now notebook RAM is very inexpensive.
I'm not talking about cheaply made RAM either, Crucial, Kingston, Corsair, etc. made in China.

vista is a little hog...but not 38% of 4 gb...that is toooo much

What programs are you running at idle?
Open up the task manager and close all the crap you don't need and go into msconfig and keep them from starting up...
the easiest way is yes...to clean install and get the bloatware off...

do you run norton? i've heard it of being that resource intensive...i hated it...and switched to nod32...way better and not invasive whatsoever....
