My experience with HP customer service has left me feeling very sour about them and I can find plenty of horror stories, but I am curious if that is the exception or the rule.

I found HP service to be very helpful. The service reps on the phone took care of me very well when my compaq v2000's motherboard broke. It was one of the more pleasant phone calls to support I ever had. I got my laptop back in about a week and they even replaced the usb port that I broke myself without asking.
I live in San Francisco and their service center is just across the bay in Fremont. So I guess I'm lucky that they're so close -
There's another thread with the same subject.

i have found the support guys from india horrible. after re-imaging my machine and proving it's a hardware problem (problem connecting external video output to CRT) they finally and reluctantly caved in and allowed me to send it in. tech support replaced the video connector it within a week and all was fine. this was with my previous HP bought in late 2005.
i have a new HP bought in late 2006. haven't had any problems at all with the machine.
