Okay, I installed two sticks of KVR533D2S4/1G (1 gig each) they work perfect, do know your zd8000/x6000 will run on the Kingtson value ram PC4200. According to my handy little app, cpuz, it's running in the dual channel mode as well. I got the Ram at newegg, it's $221.00 a stick verses 254.00 at Kingston and kingston adds tax.
My system is the compaq x6000

I just ordered a zd8000 with 256 MB of DDR2 400 RAM with the intent to upgrade with 1 GB of DDR2 533. I called Kingston about the KTH-ZD8000/1G to find out what speed it is. The tech told me it is the DDR2 400, not the 533. Furthermore, he told me the motherboard of the zd8000 is incapable of using DDR2 533. That doesn't make sense. It is a 915P chipset, right? This chipset supports DDR2 533, right? Please pardon my ignorance, as I'm not the smartest when it comes to computers.

Bottom line, can others confirm the ValueRAM KVR533D2S4/1G is indeed compatible with the zd8000?

    Thanks!

I just orderd my ZD8080, custom through AAFES(Army Air Force Exchange Service) and it comes with 1 gig of ram(2X512) I guess i got it right before they ran out of 512. I have been kinda out of the whole memory loop since before Rambus and was wondering is DDR2 400/533 is this normal DDR ram? or does the 2 signify laptop? I was searching on a site and found no DDR2, i have not been to newegg yet. at this point is there any purpose for me to need more then a gig of ram? Also I am in Iraq so in a few months I should be able to give a damn good review on the ruggedness of this laptop.

The Tech at Kingston doesn't know what he's talking about. The specific ram that kingston has for the zd8000/x6000 might be PC2 3200. But KVR533D2S4/1G is PC2 4200. I use an app called cpuz which tells me everything about my system. It shows the ram running in Dual Channel, PC2 4200, it shows the CAS latency, frequency, FSB :Dram, the serial number of the ram and manufacture date. Unless my system is a super special system.....the intel 915P chipset supports PC2 4200 and ABOVE. Kingston also sells their PC 3200 for the x6000 and zd8000 for $50 more per gig than the their own PC 4200.

Thanks for your input Tacjam. But just so you're aware, I also called HP tech support on this question too. The person I spoke to also told me that the zd8000 motherboard is only capable of supporting PC2 3200 RAM despite the fact that it uses the intel 915P chipset. He says if you put in the faster RAM, it will just run at 400MHz.

Not that I doubt your expertise, but if HP tech support is wrong, then either the person I spoke to is lying or he doesn't know what he's talking about with regard to his own product. In any event, I can live with the slower RAM. Everything else I've heard about this computer is great.

One other thing about adding RAM. Is there instructions on the web somewhere about adding memory to the zd8000? The HP website doesn't have anything for the zd8000, but does show the zd7000. Is changing memory the same for both, so that I can follow the zd7000 instructions?

Thanks in advance for any help!

I guess my level of confidence in HP tech support just dropped quite a few notches based on the info they gave me.

    Hello Everyone,

I just found this site and think its great!

I too just ordered a ZD8000,with 256megs of ram, intending to add 1

gig more as soon as it arrives.

Can I add 1 gig of this 533 to the existing 256 megs that will be

400, or will I have to remove the original ram?

    Thanks in Advance,

    mjfnj

    Hi All,
Great find on thr srvice manual !!!
Just wondering if there is one for the X6000 specfically ???

Also how hard would it be to "upgrade" the processor yourself to say a 3.6GHZ if you ordered it with a 2.8 or a 3.0 ???

Does any one have a link to the cheapset place to buy the Kingston DDR2 533 that Tacjam speaks of ???

What about tech support issues if needed down the road (Kingston says it won't work in the ZD8000/X6000 so they won't support it,and HP won't either because it did not come with the system ???

    Thanks....SHKJ

This is the cheapest I found for a 1 Gig. Newegg has it (where I bought) They just got it back in stock. I have dealt with Page Computers in the past, they are okay, shipping is not as fast as newegg. But then again...to be a better online retailer than newegg...you gotta be pretty damn good. Here is the link to Page Computers and Newegg. Page is a couple dollars cheaper when you include shipping...but you know your gonna get quality from newegg.

    http://www.pagecomputers.com/cgi-bin/page/B1535697.html

Keep in mind, if you only want 1 gig...get two 512MB sticks in order to keep your dual channel support. I stick of 1 gig will work but will only run in single channel.

As far as support goes. The cpu in the system is not soldered (per the manual)If you open up your laptop to replace the cpu...you can kiss your warranty goodbye! If the ram doesn't work you can RMA it back to newegg. The ram works flawlessly in my X6000. All the computers I've ever built....if the ram works, you prolly won't have any problems with it. If by chance the kingston ram developes a problem down the road...your good to go, Kingston Ram has a lifetime warranty. I think upgrading your cpu is more than possible. But I really don't think it's worth the $400.00 your going to pay for a 3.6GHz cpu, maybe in a year or so when the price drops. If you go to the hp.com site and click on ZD8000 then click on the laptop, "laptop hot pick" icon. If you read down, it gives a 3Dmark of 11,152 3Dmarks. That's the ZD8080 with a 5400 rpm drive a 3.6GHz cpu and 400MHz ram. In comparison I pull a 11,600 with 3.2GHz cpu, 7200rpm drive and 533MHz ram. In a real world environment...it's more than just a cpu. It's your HDD speed, Ram speed ect...The best part is, that system cost nearly $2500, my system comes in $500 cheaper. I have double the ram. I am not sure what I would pull with a 3.6GHz cpu though...it might be 200 or 300 3Dmarks higher...for $400.00 more...that's a dollar a 3Dmark. For me money is an issue, so I am happy with what I have. But hey, if you got the money....the sky is the limit!

Manuals for the X6000 can be found and downloaded here:

I would suggest you buy two sticks of 512 PC2 4200 (533MHz) That way you will keep your dual channel support. If you just add a 1 gig of ram with the existing 256MB, your going to be running on single channel, which will give you half of the bandwidth that your laptop is capable of.

Okay, Then I guess I'll get two sticks of 1 gig PC4200 (533MHz). Will using these cause any warranty issues in the future?
    Thanks,

I think you can replace your ram with Kingston PC2 4200. This is what the warranty says:

HP's limited warranty covers only those defects which arise as a result of normal use of the product, and do not apply to any:
    Improper or inadequate maintenance or modification;
Software, media, parts, or supplies not provided or supported by HP; or

Putting in More and faster ram which the notebook supports doesn't fall under inadequate maintenance or modification. But I guess you can call HP support and ask. But from what I read in this post, some of HP's techs don't know what thier own notebook supports.

Thank you for all your information. I have read the service manual and found that it states it does indeed support 4200 memory with dual channel support. So I have ordered two sticks 512 value memory from Newegg.
I was wondering if you could tell me where to find your handy little app called cpuz.
    Thank you for your time.

Someone found the manual on HP's site, (wolfspring?) has anyone found a useful manual for the media center tuner? I can't get it to acknowledge the composite-in from my vcr.

Various movies I have, like "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead" never made it to DVD, so I'm trying to convert my copies.

Yeah, I've tried bringing the outside signal through the VCR before going into the media center, but the signal quality degrades a lot that way. Speaking of which, has anyone else had problems when recording two shows, with having the second one being mpeg-artifacted into uselessness?

    thanks-

I also meant to ask, in reference to the cheap memory; has anyone considered that maybe the HP memory is ECC? (which would provide a good reason for it being a fair bit more expensive)

At first, I thought HP used Axiom to install the video cards on the ZD8000 and X6000. When you look at the manual, the MB has 4 different part #s for the 4 different video card options. I read somewhere here where a member said it was possible. It just seems like a whole lotta hassle without Axiom. I haven't opened my lappy up (it aint broke, I aint fixen it) but I bet the gpu is soldered on the MB...

TacJam Wonderful information you passed on. From one tech to another kudos to you. I do have one question my 8000 is on the way so since I can't see for myself my question is How difficult is it to replace the memory? Is it at the bottom of the laptop where a simple removal of a screw will let me access it? or do I have to rip the laptop apart to get to both memory slots?

    Tks

I should get mine today, they are bringing it from bahgdad to mosul, finally shipped on the 2nd!!!. Actually one month ain't bad for army mail. But from what i've read they are stacked on each other, and the manual kinda confirms this.

    Ordered:
    HP ZD8080
    P4 3.4
    1 Gig PC3200 ram
    100 G 4200RPM HD
    ATI X600 256M Video
    WINXP MC 2005

That's exactly what I wanted to hear. And actually quite funny you mention the hard drive. I have a 5400rpm 16 meg cache toshiba drive I use in an external enclosure when im working on peoples machines. im going to rip the 4800 rpm drive out and basically swap them. When I have more money I will eventually put in a 7200rpm. Tks for the quick reply and I will let you know how it goes once I get the laptop. One thing that bothers me is they have the factory image on a hidden partition. Atleast that is what I was told. That's annoying I want the CD. Don't get me wrong when I get it the first thing im going to do is load all my stuff Non oem. That will make it run much faster.

    hi all,
lately I have been checking out which notebook I wanna get.. this few days I have run into xd8000 and x6000, which seem to be the same expect hp is higher price than compaq. atm I wanna sell my old laptop sony slim pro vaio PIII 750 out first then order either one.
my question is.. did anyone order the 15dollar remote control? how is it? also does the media center work with dish network? and I think I saw someone post it that xd8000 has radio station? (just wondering)
atm compaq doesnt have 265 x600 video card.. and both hp and compaq remove the 7200 rmp hard drive.. sniff sniff..
