ok, long story short my parents have decided to get me and my dad laptopa for x-mas this year. I bought the ZE2308WM from wal-mart on BF and just the other day I picked up a v2000z at staples. I have my choice of the laptops and I can't decide which one to take. I will use it for most of the normal things plus some light gaming.
The laptops are pretty much the same except that the v2000z has a sempron 3000 instead of the 2800 found in the ZE2308WM. The compaq also has a 14" widescreen with brightview while the ZE2308WM has a 15" without brightview. Let me know what you guys would choose and why... thanks for your help.

Then it depends on your preference for size/weight. V2000z is smaller and ligher (hence more portable) and that would be my pick. Besides the processor is faster, if that matters for you. I'm not sure if ze2000s heat less than v2000z but having in mind that the former is a bit larger then, maybe, heat dissapition is better. Why don't you try both if you have them at home anyway?

both notebooks have only 256mb of memory?? I know the ze2308wm does.. and it was horrible. I have 1GB in mine now, along with a 7k100 60GB hard drive(7200rpm) and the thing flies... perform the same upgrades on the v2000z and it should be even faster with the slightly faster CPU.. that's what I'd choose. I love me ze2308 and all.. the price was right, and even after the upgrades I have less than $600 into it. The v2000z has a better cpu and screen(smaller but better), it'd be a no brainer for me
With just a memory upgrade(most important) it will run you a little under $100 or so shipped for a couple 512mb chips of PC3200(be sure to get 3200, not 2700.. and ditch that stock chip) to give you a 400mhz bus instead of 333(they automatically detect it and adjust.. atleast the 2308 does). I run Counterstrike:Source/HL2 on my ze2308wm just fine since I upgraded, low settings, but it runs great -
I also got one of the ZE2308wm laptops from Wal-Mart. I took out the 256 stick and put in the 3700 1GB stick. The notebook now shows that it is running at 1.59 GHz and having 896 mb ram onboard. The processor speed is showing 2800+. Does this sound right? I just want to make sure the notebook is running at its fullest capacity with the new ram I put in.

Thanks for the input guys... I have already ordered a gig of 3200 ram for the laptop, all I had to do was choose. Evreyone seems to agree that the v2000z is the better choice, I was leaning towards that one anyways. Merry X-mas everyone!

raboykin1: 1024MB - 128MB reserved for the shared memory graphics chip = 896MB. So that's right. You might want to test your memory with MemTest86+ for at least half an hour just to be thorough.

I looked at the Memtest86+ and noticed that were several different programs or versions of this program. Which one do I need to test my notebook ze2308? If someone could tell me exactly which one to download, I would appreciate it. Thanks to all.

Download the .iso image, burn it to CD, boot off the CD. If you don't have a CD burning program, BurnAtOnce should work. I use Nero.

Thanks so much brianstretch.

Take the Compaq with the Brightview screen, makes a big difference and cannot be added on.
