Is anyone aware of problems with Cool N Quiet ramping up the CPU when on battery power.

I picked up a zv6000 with the Athlon 64 3200+ 2.0 GHz. The problem is when I'm on battery power, the CPU never switches up to 2 GHz (according to both SpeedSwitchXP and AMD's dashboard app). I changed from 'dynamic switching' to 'max performance'. I even set all the SpeedSwitch options for DC to match the values for AC (that I could modify) with no affect.

I installed the latest driver from AMD (they were the exact same ones as the ones HP shipped with it).

I called HP and they had me do everything I had already tried. Their final answer was for me to send it in for repairs, but I'll just return it for a new one.

I have the 8 cell battery and I'm wondering if the battery can't supply enough current to the system to permit the CPU to run at 2.0 GHz.

Any thoughts/experience with this from anyone?

    Thanks in advance,
    WiggyWare

It should run a step or two slower than full speed (1.6GHz or so), which has a dramatic effect on power consumption. That's how the zv5000z's work. I'm not sure if the desktop CPUs the zv6000 use work precisely the same way.

Setting your Power Scheme to "Always On" from "Portable/Laptop" might override this. You might want to do that and use CrystalCPUID to manage speed and undervolt, which is what I do. I use MobileMeter to monitor CPU speed and temp.

Your computer is working as it should.

If the laptop is running on the battery power and Power Now is enabled with the power settings at Portable/Laptop. The max it will scale upto is 1.6GHz. Setting it to Always On will push it upto 2GHz.
