I have had my ZV6100 custom built HP laptop for 16 months. The thing smokes. I used to be a member of a forum that was specific to this make/model. It closed down with the shift away from this lappy.

My specs are an AMD Athlon 64 4000+ CPU, 2GB RAM, 80GB HDD(5400RPM), Dual Layer w/Lightscribe, 802.11/Bluetooth, 128MB video card - ATI Mobility Radeon Xpress 200.

Here is my problem, I went to microsoft's web-site and downloaded the diagnostic tool for determining the correct Vista version to upgrade to...currently running XP SP2 with all of the updates. The diagnostic tool told me I am only able to run Vista Basic!?!? What the....?

Is this thing wrong or am I just SOL with my Lappy? I bought it in anticipation of it being ready for the Vista OS change with ALL of the bells and whistles!

Which should I upgrade to? I need to have someone tell me that my system configuration is acceptable for Ultimate Vista. Or is it my video card?

    Any advice is much appreciated.

    Lewiedude.

It's wrong. The ATI Xpress 200 chipset can run Aero fine -- and that's the only differentiator between running Vista Home Basic and the other more "premium" offerings. Don't worry about it -- you'll be fine. But it was a system from before the "Windows Vista Capable" label got put on PCs, so I don't think HP will be providing support for running Vista -- but if you can live without their (lack of) support, then don't worry about it.

Did you perform the test when the computer was on AC power. Perhaps the processor had been clocked down, and because of that the Vista check, decided thatr the processor frequency is too low. It could be the graphics card, however, an ATI Xpress 200 chipset should be okay with the Aero effect. From the specifications, I would say that it will be fine running Vista, like jadedraverla has said.
