In reading througth many of the threads on here; many of you have upgraded your 4200RPM HD's to 7K+ drives to gain a performance edge. I have several questions about this upgrade. 1. How hard is it to do? 2.What exactly do you have to specify when getting the new HD? 3.What do you have to do to make the upgrade yourself? 4.Is there a better brand/model of upgrade HD out-there? Any suggestions on where to buy? 5. How does this effect the warranty if you DIY?
FYI I have been building/modding PC's since 1994. I just have never owned/worked on a notebook (a whole new area of computing for me).
I am senior in college who is an MIS major. So I do need some processing power, but I also really would like to bring a notebook to class, groupmeetings, and project sessions. Weight is not a big isuue for me as all I do is go from the parking lot into either the SOB or the library. Last semester, I had many project/group meetings that we had to find a spot at one of the campus computer labs where all of the group members could see the screen. If any of the group members had a notebook with at least 802.11b, we could have meet anywhere on campus.
Because of this I want to buy a notebook, but I hate that the ZX5000 has such a slow HD.
If I knew I could upgrade it myself W/O violating the warranty I would buy right now.

Short answer: get the Hitachi 7200RPM drive (60GB or 40GB), pull the adaptor off the old drive, put it on the new drive, drop it in, install the OS/etc. Very easy, just be careful not to bend any pins. Replacing the HD is not believed to void the warranty.

Check the zv5000z too, if you can live with the weak GPU. You're going to want to play with 64-bit and NX hardware assisted worm protection sooner rather than later as a MIS major. Plus you'd get to educate your professors [ :D].

You can get the 60gig 7200rpm harddrive from www.zipzoomfly.com for about $180.
