What is the level of difficulty to change out my current dv7 1600x900 screen to the 1080p one? I have never done this before.

With most notebooks its pretty easy but the dv7 has a pretty seemless design.

You would most likely have to take apart the entire notebook, while i don't imagine that this would be too difficult you would definitely need to be organized.

Hopefully more info about this will show up soon in the modding thread.

I found the original owners manual that included dissassembly instructions. You can look through what you have to do to get the screen out. It looks like you will have to take apart most of the laptop to do it that way it was listed in the manual. I have taken most of it apart before and it is not to hard (with the acceptation of a few parts. Hopefully it is compatible with the new screen.

doesn't it seem that the HP Part# is for the whole lid assembly? Just an observation. I would still think the panel is obtainable, just maybe NOT from HP.... not necessarily a bad thing

Take a look at this you tube video to get an idea of how it should go. Should be similar. YouTube - ‪HP pavilion dv7 lcd screen replacement‬‏

what about replacing the dv6 ? is there any difference in terms of connections etc ? could you do it yourself by following the DV7 example?

Keep in mind that if you replace the LED screen, you will also likely need to check on replacing the LED invertor board as well.

fluorescent backlit screens have invertors... it doesn't really make any sense that LED backlit screens would ... does it???

I don't know. I've only ever worked with LCD. I can't imagine they are all that different. Just trying to offer abit of caution before jumping in blind. If they are different - just say so.

I don't think LED's need inverters. I could be wrong. I think its the CCFLs which need the inverters and larger power supplies.

I don't believe you need an inverter. You may need the LCD cable from the 1080p DV6 however, unless the LCD cable that comes with the 720p screen is already compatible with higher resolution screens.

The screen look like it has a 40-pin socket. Is the 720p one 40pin?

It looks as if izzy has learned something new this day. Apparently, LED screens do not have invertor boards. At least that is what the maintenance and repair manual for the dv6 lists.

But it does appear that you have to actually remove the main board to get at the panel under the bezel. Hope that is wrong.

I have the Maintenance and Service Guide for the dv6tqe-6000 series. However, I can nolonger seem to locate it on HP's support site, otherwise I would post the link.

Here is a link to the file in my SkyDrive. Hope it works if someone is interested: HP Pavilion dv6 Notebook PC - Maintenance and Service Guide.pdf - Windows Live

I haven't tried this, but from the manual it look like you may be able to do it by only removing the screws on the bezel. The instructions seem like it would be "easier" (in terms of working with an open space), but is you remove the bezel screws you make be able the swap the screens while attached to the hinges.
But remember, This is just a theory

hp screens come with the top cover - it's not just the display panel. It is true that you have to remove the mainboard to get to the display hinges, but it's not that bad - 15 minutes or so and you are there if you follow the maintnance guide.

If that is the case, why not just remove the display panel from the 1080p replacement part and swap it with the old screen by removing the bezel. This would seem a lot easier than having to take the entire laptop apart.

the bezel seems much more fragile than the actual laptop - i am really not confident that if i take the screen apart i wont break any of the plastics

I'm pretty sure you can remove the bezel without taking the laptop apart. Just tilt back the screen and remove the 2 screws. Taking apart the laptop was necessary with the older DV6s because the screws were hard to reach. This doesn't seem to be the case now.

If I recall from past experiences with the dv6000 series, the entire display panel (webcam, bezel, wireless antenna, plastics and screen) can be purchased complete. Although it would be much less exspensive to order just the screen, at least if purchased complete, it would alleviate any concerns about destroying the bezel in the process of upgrading. I have to imagine that you could order a complete unit, either from HP's part store or a licensed supplier, in this way.

Sorry about the parallel post, but I posted some pics in the 1080p DV6 LCD Cable thread. As a request, can we put all new posts in that thread so we don't have 5 parallel threads.

Thanks for posting the DV6-6000 Manual Izagaia! Do you happen to have access to the manual for the DV7tqe -6000 series as well? All HP seems to have right now are the generic "Windows 7 laptop" manuals.

    Quick question guys,

I have 5 days left to return my dv7tqe and replace it with a 1080p screen and also be able to order 2 battery's i forgot about. So, is it worth the extra $~150 to have a 1080p screen? or is my current 900P screen doing justice? And would i loose any performance with fps while gaming?

yes you will see a small performance hit with modern games but u can manually lower the resolution to 900p and see the same framerate before u upgraded. as far as if its worth it, i'd have to see the 900p :D

i personally don't like 1080p on laptops because it makes the text very small!

I am afraid not. I only downloaded the one I did, because of just purchasing my dv6.

A good site where I have located many technical manuals, in the past, is Retrevo - The Ultimate Electronics Marketplace .

Retrevo says they are still "processing" the manual. Guess I'll just have to wait until HP releases it or find someone with a partner login to grab it for me.

    Thanks! :)

Thanks so much. Looking everywhere for this. HP changed the back so I did not know how to remove the service panel without damaging it. This is really a godsend.

I tried to write a note to your Windows Live but did not have your email and it does not show on my own Windows Live page.
