Probably None. But upgrading to 2gb from any reputable memory manufacturer will increase system performance.

Yes buying 2 gigs from Newegg or Outpost.com ect will definalty help out in Vista and will be cheaper.

Save your money. The difference from having a different brand stick, if any, would be barely noticeable. Just make sure the clock speed is the same for both sticks. Otherwise, both will be running at the lower speed.

Yes. Probably 1x1GB instead of 2x512MB, since the extra you pay is usually less than buying a new 1GB stick, but check the prices. Newegg is a good place.

More than likely your new laptop will come with 2x512mb modules occupying the two slots in the computer to give you dual-channel memory access, so you can't ADD a 1gb module - there are no free slots.

As for performance, Vista likes 1gb to work well, and more is better to run various programs at once or to run programs with large documents like large photo edits. I wouldn't buy a computer with less than 2gigs today, it's just not practical when using Vista.

If you can find a buyer willing to take your 2x512mb modules, it might be worth it to buy 2x1gb modules from a third party. But it might be an issue if you need warranty repair...the modules HP installs are guaranteed to be compatible.

Personally I think you should save yourself the hassle. Just order it with 2x1gb modules right away and you know it all works and HP will honour the warranty.

Vista really needs 2GB. 1GB is what XP likes, but I can say from experience that Vista is a dog with only 1GB.

As for dual channel, I can't find any information saying the the HP laptops support this. If you know of specs, please point me to them.

Your warranty is not an issue if you use aftermarket modules. You can find more information here, or do a search for the "Magnuson-Moss Act". Under that law, HP cannot deny you warranty coverage because you used 3rd party modules (though the HP warranty will, of course, not cover the 3rd party RAM).

In this case, "saving the hassle" will probably cost you $50-$75. If you go for the 4GB RAM option, it will cost you $400 (HP 4GB=$600, 3rd party 4GB=$200).

Just wanted to correct myself on the dual channel issue. Looking at the specs for the Santa Rosa chipset (GM965), it does support dual channel.

To utilize the full 4 GB of memory you HAVE to have Vista 64-Bit. :D

BTW GeForce Go 6150/MCP 430 powered dvXXXXz laptops support dual channel ram...and for the actual question, aftermarket ram is a lot cheaper than OEM.

No, because then you'll lose dual-channel memory access. Buy a pair of 2GB SODIMMs and upgrade to 64-bit at your leisure.

I've been hoping to play with PAE on vista which would give it access to all 4GB of RAM, but my 4GBs were bad, so I can't test ATM. Having a hard time finding info on PAE in Vista though.

I ordered 3GB for my lappy with Vista x86. As for dual-channel, I won't miss it anyway since my current S754 workhorse does not support it at all. I'll just buy another 2GB stick at a later date, when I'm ready to go 64bit and 2gb stick prices get cheaper (hopefully).

Besides, I figure 3Gb of single-channel ram in Vista will still be better performing than 2gb of dual-channel.
