the AC adapter of my 8510p notebook is driving me nuts.

there's a somewhat muted high-pitched noise coming out of it, sounding like constant chirp or a dentist's drill or something like that. it's not loud, actually it's very subtle, but it's extremly annoying.

does anybody else have this noise coming out of the ac adapter? is my adapter broken maybe?

Heard that same thing before in a swiss forum. An user there has posted experienced the very same thing. he instantly bought a new ac-adapter and left the old one for good.

My personal experience with this ac-adapter is even worse. After i received my new 8510P last week, sometning inside the ac-adapter imploded. Since the whole notebook was just 8 hours old, HP did grant me a DOA (death on arrival) and maybe tomorrow i´ll finally get the replacement.

But during my waiting time for the new unit i called my reseller several times and he stated that HP has recognized that these ac-adapters do make a lot of problems. He said he received an official mail by HP that states : HP is going to ship a new batch of ac-adapters and he should replace the old ones.

Whether this whole story is true or not i don´t know. But i do know that these "smart" - adapters do cause problems.

You should call HP and ask them to replace the ac-adapter. Since your notebook is quite new i guess you don´t have to take it as is. This high-pitched noise is not what you would expect from an expensive business notebook. So tell HP your problem and ask them kindly for replacement.

not to alarm you, but depending on how hot its getting, this could be a fire hazard...
if it is getting very warm, i would get it replaced

now that you´ve mentioned it, yes the smart adapter was really hot. I touched it a minute or so after it blew up, and it was nearly burning my hand.

The HP Compaq business notebook power adapters ("smart adapters" as HP calls them, ironically) are notoriously unreliable from my experience. After one year, I am on my 3rd power brick and second wall cord. The area where the wire comes right out of the power brick and goes to the notebook is a notorious weak point, and at least one of my adapters failed because of that. I've also talked to many other students that have had their power adapters replaced at least once in the past year, too.

Assuming the 8510 series uses the same adapter, expect to have power adapter problems, especially if you travel with it constantly. If the power adapter sits at your desk all the time, you shouldn't worry. Just take extra care when traveling with the adapter; don't wrap the cord too tightly or you'll strain the aforementioned weak point on the adapter.

    wow...
i would think that the business notebook ac adapters would be better than the pavilion notebook adapters

    not at all.

hp offers these bricks for 22 euros here in germany. ( price from HP spare parts list). I guess the price says a lot about quality. Most of the bricks for other notebooks do cost about twice as much.

"Nice" from HP to offer such a cheap thing, once it´s broken you don´t have to pay a lot of cash for a replacement.

But when i´m buying a business notebook id like to have business quality everywhere. It seems to be a paradoxon, to offer a "professional" notebook that comes with an ac-adapter of third-party-no-name-manufacturer-quality, and i really do hope HP will recognize this aswell.

This one is for HP : I´M WILLING TO PAY TWICE AS MUCH FOR THE AC-ADAPTER, IF IT BECOMES BUSINESS - QUALITY.

    Hope you heard me HP.

Is there a thread referencing the problems with these adapters? After reading this I checked mine on my brand new 8510p. I've seen adapters get warm before, but this was truly HOT! I need to know some particulars before I approach HP or my reseller. Any thread or link to HP info on the subject? Thanks!
