I'm looking to get a new laptop and was angling between the v2000z and 700m dell.
I have several friends with the 700m and can be sure of the build quality but am wondering how the v2000z fares after couple month's use. I don't really trust compaq but the laptop has gotten positive reviews.
I currently own an averatec 3200 series and although it had great specs and price, it has just terrible build quality. It overheats and switches off spontaneously and a fully charged battery drains in one hour or less.
I just want to know if people have had positive experiences with the v2000z. thanks

it will be best if you search the threads here. To my mind, v2000z is the most discussed notebook in the HP forum and you can find really abundant info about it.

Looking at a cnet review, they say that the performance of the laptop is not up to par. Does anyone have complaints about performance? If I were to get the v2000z, I would go for turion 2ghz, 1gb ram, 60gb 5400rpm.

On synthetic benchmarks, Intel usually has the edge. On real-world benchmarks, AMD usually has the edge. If the benchmarking programs were compiled with Intel's rigged compilers Intel REALLY has the edge. (Intel's compiler treats AMD CPUs as i486's, ignoring SSE/etc instructions and all other optimizations.) Basically, benchmarks cooked up by ZDNet and BAPco should be considered suspect (BAPco used to be headquartered in an Intel building), but even with the deck stacked against it the AMD64 CPUs still win some. On 32-bit code, keep it simple and compare the P-M to the Turion on a straight clockspeed basis. On 64-bit code Intel is a no-show but AMD picks up some very nice performance gains.
Good configuration. Get the 12 cell battery if you can live with the extra size/weight and the Bluetooth option. -
Just looking around the web, very good reviews on both. I would go with the Compaq from a retailer just in case you get a defective mother board or dead pixels out of the case. My 2000 works fine after a month but I brought back a BF Acer to Staples because of a sub-standard (not defective) screen with a full refund. Kind of apples and oranges though. You are talking 12 VS 14 in. widescreen as well as different CPUs and companies.
any common v2000z problems?
