If you are trying to 'pirate' I mean 'back up' a DVD, the current software no longer does that. It is called copy protection to protect multimillion dollar actors and producers to ensure that they have Blue Label Scoth versus MD 20/20. Xcopy was available many months ago that allowed you to copy stuff but was taken off of the market very quickly.

DVD burners are used to back up gigabytes of information and home movies, in general.

Unless you have two DVD drives (one to read and one to write ),I don't understand how you can copy a DVD ?? [ :D][ :D]

lapboy, you can just rip the DVD to your hard drive, provided you have enough space, and then burn it to a blank DVD. Why doesn't the DV1000 have a dual layer DVD burner!? [ :(!]

you don't need one, just get dvdshrink and a few other programs to do it, or dvd xcopy will just rip the movie and put it on a dvd with no menus or extras.

I bought a DV1000 from Costco and no problem at all in backing up DVDs. Also, rahulnirmal. The DVD inside DV1000 is actually a dual layer DVD burner but you need to flash the firmware to NE6500 ver 2.3. I did that and it is dual layer DVD writer now. [8D]

What are the specs from the one from costco? Sorry it's just that the nearest one takes me 40 minutes to drive and I only go once every 3 weeks.

Oh yes, and what if I want a custom built one with a DVD burner from HPshopping.com? Will that have the same burner as the one in Costco?

HighTechFan, are you absolutly sure that it has a dual layer dvd burner? Because I heard someone on www.dv1000forums.com say that it doesn't. If it does, then I'll be getting the DV1000.

I was thinking of getting the 700m because I know for sure it can have a dual layer dvd burner. But I didn't like its small keyboard and smaller screen size. I know right now dual layer blank discs are expensive, but when they are cheap, I'd like to take advantage of the 8 gigs the dual layer discs have. Plus, I'd like to copy dvd's without DVD Shrink which reduces their quality a bit.

How do you flash the firmware?

    rahulnirmal,

I cannot say that I definitely sure it will work with DL as I don't want to spend money on the media and try out yet. Nero tool reports it is DL write compatible.

I was reading the DV1000forum also and I don't recall anyone say that it is not a DL burner. People were talking about how to flash the DVD burner with the following link. And, no one complain yet.
