I have an Hp dv7 AMD triple core N830 processor with 4gb of memory. I never have abunch of programs open at one time and I close everything out when im done but this PC gets way to hot to where I cant even touch certain areas. like right now even I dont have anything else opened up besides this page and its running loud and im not even scanning. I have norton 360 and it heats my PC when its scanning for sure but i have it set on a schedule.

its mostly hot on the left side of the computer. underneath you will end up burning yourself

what all should I check to make my laptop run cooler ?

Well first of, how hot does it get (idle/load)? What energy settings are you running (Balanced, Power saving, performance)? What surface are you running it on (table, bed, knee)? How old is it (could it be filled with dust)? Has it been this hot from day 1?

My experience says that the Phenom II tri-cores doesn't get that hot (my Acer 5551G with N830 didn't at least). Don't know about DV7's cooling compared to the Acer.

Can u use a tool like HWmonitor to find the values of CPU/GPU.

I would suggest getting a cooler, then undervolting and if you are confortable then re-pasting and re-seating the heat sinks.

I would definitely consider doing this. It may cost $7-$10 bucks, at your local RadioShack for the thermalpaste (it's a really tiny tube for what you have to spend on it), but it is worth it, in the long run. And as long as you have it apart, you can get yourself some canned air and blowout all the crap as well.

Another thing, IMO, that could reduce heat (maybe not enough but would definitely help) would be to consider switching out any 7200rpm HDD for a solidstate, if you have the $$$ to invest or move to a good quality 5400rpm model.
