    Here are some tips

    1. GO to power settings by left clicking once on the little battey icon in the task bar. Select Max battery. It clocks down the processor when it's not needed at full speed. On this setting, using office tasks, you probably won't notice any performance difference.

    2. Press Fn+F7 to turn the display brightness. The display is one of the biggest energy consumers in the machine so turn it down. There are 10 brightness settings, dimmest to brightest, and 5 or 6 is fine for me.

    3. Turn off your wireless card when you aren't using it by hitting the blue lighted wireless button. It makes a big difference in life.

I have a PM 1.6ghz, with 1x512 MB ram, a 4200rmp HD, and brightview. With my 12 cell battery I get 8.5 to 9+ hours of life using these settings. This should translate to atleast 3.5 to 4 hours for your 6 cell battery. If it's still not lasting with these settings, then there is probably something wrong with your battery.

Also, remember that faster processors, even on max battery will draw a bit more power, as they don't clock down as low. The voltage consumed by a 1.8 or 2.0 Ghz will be higher than a 1.6Ghz. Consider this if you have a faster processor. It shouldn't be a huge difference, but could explain a small discrepancy in battery life (but not an hour and a half.) Also 5400 or 7200 rpm HD do consume a little more power than the 4200, but it is negligible.
