Most of my friends have laptops and their battery meter also has a predicted amount of time that the battery will last. My dv6000t doesn't show a time in the meter and only a percentage. Is there some sort of option that I have to enable to see the time left or has that feature been removed from the newer HPs?

HP notebooks for the past 2 odd years have only shown the percent remaining for the battery charge instead of the time. There are utilities like RMClock/NHC which are capable of estimating the battery time left but in some cases they are not too accurate.
