I have a 12-cell battery in my CompaQ presario R4000. 2 months ago the laptops suddenly went off and stopped working. took a long time getting things restored but the battery has stopped working.

When I switch the ac on, the charing light goes on for a few seconds. Also the battery is shown as present but at 0%.

I know the battery is still good as I was using it for atleast 1+ hours before this happened.

That's the point. The battery didnt die eventually but suddenly.

It's 2 years old. Its still gave 1.5+ hours of life before it just went out. Now laptops shows 2% and doesnt charge. It does show that the battery is present.

PS: Does that have anything to do with BIOS? I remember updating BIOS from HP website around the same time.

suddenly, eventually,, after 2 years, it's eventually after 2 months from the factory, a dying battery is suddenly. but a dead battery is still a dead battery, you need to replace it. you can't fix it.

So, you didnt use the battery for 2 months following the laptops death? If so then that could have contributed to your batteries demise. Its quite common for batteries to lose their capacity to hold charge over time and especially if it isnt stored in the right conditions.

If you have a friend with the same L/T, why not try putting your battery in their L/T to see if it charges before you file it in the round filing cabinet.
I never use my battery, (once in a blue moon) every 6 or so weeks I put it in discharge the power by using it, then recharge and store it again, it's still like new. Been doing this for 8 months, I read it in a battery maintenance article on some site a while ago.
